Offroading in Pennsylvania

Setting aside the ongoing discussion about the legalities of driving in and around the private/public/whatever property of Centralia itself, I have a couple of more general questions for the Pennsylvania locals.

Many states have a requirement for an offroad permit and/or sticker when driving/riding offroad on state or federal public lands. (1) Does Pennsylvania have such a requirement? (2) Is the St. Clair / Burma area public or private land?

As far as I know (and I may just be uninformed), PA offroad permits are like New Jersey's and Delaware's -- site specific. For instance, beach permits come to mind for driving to surf fishing sites and so forth. Those areas you cited don't appear to be "incorporatated" in any managed entity, so my guess would be no permits.

We never did find out about St.Clair as far as that goes and it's a good question. Locals say it's "legal" to drive there and they hold offroad motorcycle competitions there and all sorts of things. People are parked all along the main adjacent road at times with trucks and trailers with offroad vehicles on them.

I wonder if there's anything online about it? I'll search some and see -- that's how I found out about the Kilcohook/Ft. Mott site being illegal.

AFAIK, no. the only permit i know of that one needs is to go on private land. otherwise its fair game.

to clairfy this for myself, do u mean just going off-road on any trail...like do u need a permit for that? because i think most of the state land (like a park) are off limit to public use. good question.

I have lived in California and Michigan most of my life. In those states, there are stickers sold by the state that are required to offroad on open public land. The public land for offroading doesn't include parks, designated wilderness areas and the like. I was wondering if the situation in PA is similar.
