I just changed my oil for the first time (since I have owned the truck) @ 100k.
5w20 as recommended and now I noticed the oil gauge flickering at idle (850rpm) after the truck gets hot. Add just a touch of throttle and it goes away. Going through the service records....the shop that did the work on the truck used 10w30 on the last few oil changes Thicker oil didn't show this prob with the gauge.
I know its a dummy gauge and doesn't tell me the actual pressure but what is the bottom end of the sending unit/switch. Is this something I need to worry about immediately? Like replacing the expensive oil pump drive in place of the distributor? (cant remember what it's called)

 

Personally I'd run a thicker oil with higher milage.

The 10 30 probably didn't hurt anything, I wouldn't go back to a thinner oil.

It probably isn't going to cause problems, maybe next oil change, throw in a quart of Lucas if you're gonna run a thinner oil.

 

I don’t have an answer on the oil gauge but run what is in the book… 5-20W.
There are oils out there for older engines, i.e. Valvoline Max Life.

You could always use 10-30 if that’s makes you feel better but I have found I get a slight tappet ticking noise wit 10-30.

Yeah, on cold starts it might take a little to get it flowing, so it will tick.

I'd still use the Lucas.

 

oh ya and BTW, make sure you put in enuff oil....check the fluid level after it sits overnight and add oil as needed. unless you live in a cold area, use 10-30. oil pressure switch are like 6-10 bucks at autozone if you need one..good luck

I always use 10w30 in all my vehicles.

 

I have read a few guys talking about the bronze oil pump drive gear stripping out, just figured I'd ask. See if anyone else is experiencing this.
The switch is still working good. I'll probably just go back to my 10-30 for the next change.
I don't have any ticking and I do have enough oil in there. Castrol GTX high mileage.

 

your sensor needs to be replaced. mine did the same thing (video below)




you can hear when i hit the gas the needle goes up



Backside of the valve cover on the passengers side near the firewall, you'll see the wire going to it. Really easy to change. Unplug the electrical connector then wrench it off and reinstall.
