Overhead Console wiring for 2004 Ranger

I'm a "newbie" and have not been able to locate wiring info for a 2004 Ranger FX4. I installed an Explorer Overhead console using John Griggs instructions but there is no Gray/Black wire at the GEM (VSS) on the 2004 Ranger. The gray/black wire from the OHC harness is supposed to be tapped into a gray/black wire coming out of the black plug connector at the GEM. Since my 2004 does not have a gray/black wire at the GEM, does anyone know which wire the temp sensor wire taps in to? I know that some people don't use the temp sensor wire, but I would like to if I can. Also, there is no Yellow/Black wire coming out of the wiring harness at the radio. Is there another wire I can tap connect into for the Yellow/Gray wire from "Group 2" of John's instructions? Thanks for any help.

There are a few differences for 2004+:

Console Power (Explorer Yellow/Gray at console)-
2003-back Ranger: Yellow/Black at radio harness
2004-on Ranger: Black/Pink at radio harness

Speed Sensor Input (Explorer Gray/Black at console)-
2003-back Ranger: Gray/Black at GEM
2004-on Ranger: Gray/Black at Smart Junction Box (brown connector)

Map Light Power (Explorer Lt. Green/Orange at console)-
2003-back Ranger: Lt. Green/Orange at dome light
2004-on Ranger: Lt. Green/Orange at dimmer module

Otherwise, you should be able to use John's wiring instructions as written: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/296394/4

As a matter of fact, that may be exactly the same message that I sent you before. I had it saved as a Word document because I knew this would come up again.

I need to ask John to add this info to his how-to.

Thanks for the quick reply, Bob. I have wires hanging all over the place as this issue stopped me dead in my tracks. I had the Green/Orange wire tapped into the existing map light so I appreciate the fact that you included this wire in your instructions. I guess it would be no problem rerouting it to the dimmer module. Since the overhead console mod appears to be very popular, your information will be invaluable to 2004 + model year owners!.

Yep, he's right. Bob was a lot of help before when I did mine, and it turned out great.

Get pics of your install when you're all finished.

It's OK to tap the green/orange console wire to the green/orange map light wire. You're lucky - most 2004's don't have that wire because it was deleted mid year.

Bob pointed me to this page and I've added his wiring table as an addendum to my Cardomain page on wiring the OHC.

Thanks, Bob!

Looks good, John! Thanks. Yours is the site that everybody goes to for the overhead console instructions. I'm sure that will help a lot of people as we add more of the 2004+ Rangers to the mix.

Thanks Bob and John!. I finally finished the overhead console installation. It came out really nice after a lot of adjusting of a gap in the front of the console (garage door opener side). Also, I rerouted the orange/green wire from the map light wire to the dimmer module as I did not go back online to see your post that it's OK to leave as is. After everything was hooked up, I noticed that the OHC display did not dim so I took the dash panel and metal plate off again to check the connection. The connection is fine so I can only assume that maybe it's a model year specific issue as my OHC came from a 98 Explorer. It's fine the way it is as I never dim my dash lights anyway. I will have to post a picture of the completed installation when I get a chance. Thanks again. There is no way possible I could have done it without your help! (P.S.) I only said two bad words during the installation!!

Mine does the same thing. I don't know which year Ex my console is from but it has to be 98~2001 because it has a green display.
