Hope this isn't too heretical for this forum... I love my 05 Edge, but try as I can it stubbornly refuses to improve beyond approximately 12 mpg, so far as I can tell... which makes me think, I might as well get the advantages of a full size truck (looking at a 96 F150 5.0 with 4wd) since I don't have any fuel advantage. Does anyone have any thoughts, insights, recommendations, admonitions on the subject?
Sorry for the semi-tangential topic, given the forum's focus! Any feedback appreciated!
OHV 5.0 would probably be one of the worst engines you could get in a pre-1996 truck. It is to the F150, what the 3.0 is to the Ranger. The minute you load it down with anything, your fuel mileage will tank to 8 or 9 mpg. If you're dead set on an older F150, I would keep an eye out for a 351W.
For what it's worth, I've hauled complete engines and 30% of a 1989 F250 in the back of my 2003 Edge, and it never skips a beat. It's done everything I've asked it to, and in my opinion does everything an older F150 would do, except haul cars. But in all honesty, my dad had an 87 F150 w/302 and it was sluggish whenever he pulled his cars around. He needed a 351W.
