Ranger, what year and motor????

Hi to all just join the forum, what a great place this is. I had a 99 4 cyl i believe it was a 2.3 or 2.5(not sure about 6 years ago) and never had any issues, great mpg, i was very happy but i had it for work aswell and security isn't all that on trucks, long story short sold it. Now i am in the market for another one, Any advice from you guys on what year truck and motor i should look for, maybe there some year motors better than others?

first off, what would you use it for, do you want 4x4 or 4x2. Those are the big things. And a 03 level 2 is basically one of the most sought after rangers. 4x4 with a manual transfer case.

so a something like 2wd 4 banger should be what you are looking for. Ive heard alot of good things about the newer 2.3 i think they started in 01 or 02. Couple of my buddies have the 2.3 and love it for a DD. Great mileage and decent power.

There are a few diff engines simulatenously offered. Jetskis aren't hard to tow so as long as you're comfortable with using 2wd at a boat launch id go with the smallest(aka best mileage) engine offered.

3.0 2wd and a 3.0 4wd is alot different. I guess its not uncommon to average low 20s mpg in a 3.0 2wd. 3.0 4wd though is a different story I was getting 14 or 15 mixed in mine with 31s.
