Off the wall idea

While we had my truck up on the lift yesterday redoing my exhaust, i noticed and "ungodly" amount of room up under where the old spare tire and care used to sit. Now pretty soon, i plan on going through the frame, and replacin all the crossmembers with square tubing, and in doin this, it will give a lil bit more room back there.

Now, all that said, i had the idea to get a fuel cell, of similar size of my factory tank, and mount it back there in the big space. Then fab up a removable skid plate for it. Now my concerns are the depth on the tanks, and where i should put the new filler neck and cap.

any thoughts?

I am sure I missed other posts.. But why are you replacing frames mebers and needing a fuel cell? Not bashing, just curious...

Once i do the solid axle, im removing all the old factory stuff up front. so i loose a crossmember or two. and i want to replace them with square tubing, which should be stronger, and take up less room. And in the rear, i want to get rid of that curved crossmember that was part of the spare tire system, so i can put in a new one and mount my rear bumper to as well for added strength.

As for the fuel sell, i thought that it would be an interesting idea, will center the weight more midline, and also add some weight to the rear of the truck. I should be able to get one that fits well back there, and be able to make a skidplate for it. I dont really see things hitting it up there as much as it would/does where its at now.

I'm lifting my exhaust into the area that the tire carrier was. Get it out of the way.

my exhaust is up along the passenger side frame rail, and dumped just after the trans. so thats not gonna be in my way. you cant even really see my exhaust, i just gotta hit it with a lil black paint in one spot and you really wont be able to.

but back to the tank idea.......

found one on at summit, 16 gallon, 25"L 17"W 9"H. If i remember right, i got around 31" for the distance between the frame rails when measuring for the SAS. im sure i got plenty of height back there with the body lift.

ok well since my idea isnt so far off the wall, is there much i would need to make this happen? Would i be able to use the factory in tank pump that i already have in the new one? Im guessin id need new line, for the added distance from the engine. Anything else?

This is the tank that im looking at, 16 gal. They have a 22gal, but i think it might be a little bit to long.

its a bit distant future, but yes, theres a 302 sitting in my moms old car outside.

theres two 22gal tanks, ones more layed out(34"L 14"W 11"D), the other is more "cub'ish"(25"L 17"W 14"D). both 22gal's are $140, and the 16gal is $115. Would i need one with a sender in it?

I would try to put a 22 gal in. Sounds like a good idea. Expecially with offroading.

the 22 doesnt have the extra sump in the bottom that can be useful for offroad.

is the 4cyl returnless? or return style? most of these tanks only have outlets, and a vent.

haha great minds think alike chris..

i ordered some sticks of tubin at work to do the same thing..metal should be here tomorrow..im gunna cut out the carrier gunna get a tank to fit down in..and run the neck and stuff straight up into the bed..ill have to get in the bed to fill but like you said gets rid of lean and junk..

my plan was to move it and run lightin style out both sides of the truck..

and in return shave the gas door off da truck
