rattling/squeeking noise at 2500rpm

I have a 2002 ford ranger edge that makes a noise only just before and at 2500rpm. This has to be some type of engine noise or it the noise would be there all the time not just at that rpm range. The noise is hard to describe, it's sort of a squeeling rattling noise that just sounds awful. i try not to put the rpms in that range because i'm sure it sounds gross from the outside of the vehicle. I've brought it to the local Ford dealership here and they took it for a test drive and still cant determine what it is which leaves me feeling a little uneasy of the ford mechanics. I brought it specifically to the ford dealer hoping they would be the people to find out what it is for me but they said "maybe" its something to do with my fuel system and suggested i have them do a fuel system flush. I haven't done anything since then but I'm thinking of going back to see if they could have another look at it. I decided to bring this up to other Ranger owners to see if anyone could help me find out what it is or if someone else has encountered this problem in the past. Thanks.

need more info about truck...motor, miles, etc

if its a 4.0 it sounds like the dreaded t-chain tensioner problem

4.0 litre v6 auto trans roughly 79000km's on it. If its a t-chain tensioner why does it only happen at 2500 rpms? I mentioned this to the ford mechanic that i thought it was a belt but apparently he thinks its the fuel system.

Yeah it sounds horrible and I definitely want it fixed. Is that jack chain tensioner an easy fix?

Good to know. I wonder why everyone calls it the Timing Chain Tensioner problem.

And no it's not an easy fix. There are like 2-3 of those tensioners on the engine in different spots under different accessories and stuff, have the dealer you bought it from fix it, save yourself the headache. Hopefully it is under a 60 day warranty or something.
