I've taken out all the plastic trim that holds the headliner. Two questions so far:

1) how do you remove the plastic clips without breaking them or bending the headliner? Keep in mind, I don't have the tool to remove those.

2) is the headliner and foam padding glued to the metal roof? I'm pulling on it and it seems that way, but I don't want to pull too hard just in case it's being held on with those plastic clips.

 

cut the clips with dikes and buy new ones at the hardware store.

 

Get one of those tools. Around $5 at the auto parts store. You have to remove your a pillar trim as well as all the trim hugging the headliner, basically gotta gut the interior. If you just pull on it you're going to tear it and ruin it.

 

Both a-pillars are already removed.

I'l stop by autozone and pick up the tool... didn't know they carried it. Thanks.



What about the whole headliner? is it glued to the metal?

 

The liner is a foam fabric that is glued to a hardboard.
The fabric can be bought at fabric craft stores like JoAnns and I used a 3m spray...don't skimp on the spray.
Utube has a great vid explaining the whole process.

And don't cut the clips and there isn't any special tool.
Everything pops out...unless someone before you f**ked up and cut the clips and glued it all up to the ceiling.

A roof rack installation normally requires the headliner to be pulled. I saw Korey's How-To thread on recovering the headliner with suede, but it didn't go into detail on how to remove the headliner.

I just figured if you can mount a roof rack and load up your rig then you can work out the headliner.

He's going with an explorer OEM roof rack. You have to drill through the roof for it to mount on. Its not a thule/yakima rack that just clamps on which is why he has to remove the headliner.

Kidding aside the pressboard headliner does damage easily...but can be mended

My install will be a LOT more intensive than that...

I'm not gonna use self-taping screws 'cause I don't want my roof rack flying off at highways speeds. I will be using nuts and bolts... hence why the HEADLINER NEEDS TO COME OUT. (same as post #6 in your link)

Ok... the headliner was KINDA glued to the roof. The best me and another member could figure out was that the glue from the foam melted from the summer heat and glued the headliner to the roof. Just a littler harder yank and it's out.

That was about an hour ago... I've been sitting in my truck trying to figure out how I want to mount the rack and run all the wires for the lights that will be on top. lol. It would be so much easier if I didn't want to mount those switches above my head.

 

No need to remove the headliner, in my experience

I went to the beginning for ya...
I have used a 3/16 blind rivet if you don't trust tappers and foam tape.

Too bad some of the headliner foam/glue melted to the 'flat inside' cab of the roof.
I'll get right on another solution...I'm that 'kinda' sic guy!
