Calipers keep working loose

Ok, I broke my calipers loose last weekend to check my brake pads. They were fine, so I put it all back together. Now, the driver side bolts that hold the caliper to the spindle are backing out. I originally tightened them down with just a normal ratchet, pulling nice and tight (no idea on ft/lbs). 400 miles later and I have a clunking noise coming from the front end. I found the caliper was loose. So I cranked them down again, pulling them as tight as I can. Drove probably 40 miles like that, and it sounds like it may be coming loose again.

Am I missing something here? I don't want to put a cheater bar on there and risk busting something. (You can tell I do this all the time, haha).

85 lb-ft. Otherwise, they can work loose. Use a torque wrench to be sure.

I gotta admit that I'm hesitant to use locktite... mind you I haven't used it much in the past but isn't it nearly impossible to get back off?

I had to use an impact wrench to back them off the first time. In fact, that reminds me that I need to look into replacing one of the bolts... the craftsman socket broke and started rounding off the bolt. I managed to back it out but it's fairly worn now. Luckily that's on the passenger side.

Wouldn't some locking rings work as well?

Sounds like I'm just a weak-#$& when it comes to tightening bolts.

Loctite and other threadlockers come in several different formulas for different apps. Check the label. Blue Loctite is generally easy to remove but some types of red Loctite can be very difficult.

Using threadlocker is fine but it will not necessarily stop the loosening problem if you fail to torque the bolts to spec.

A cheater bar can always be used to back them back off...mild loctite. You still have that problem?

Never thought of the locking washers before...I suppose that would work. Try it and report back... *shrug*
