I want to put a carbed 302 in mine. My 3.0 is super slow is amazingly crappy mpg, I wouldn't mind the crappy mpg of it atleast had some power...

Think what you will....the SOHC motor is one of the poorest engineered motors ford has ever made (coming from someone that bleeds blue)
I have a 3.0, it is not a powerhouse, but with 4.10's and 33's im getting 20 city and 23 highway.
The SOHC timing chains suck and i cringe when i hear the noise they make, they are fun to drive and probably fun to own until about the 80-100k mark.
Bash me all you want, but those of you that have the timing chain noise, have replaced them, or have had them replaced know what im talking about.
I am a fan of the pushrod 4.0's but the extra power of the SOHC in my opinion isnt worth the hassle of internal engine problems when they get up there in mileage [/rant] sorry guys

Just a comment:

No edge, but my truck was advertsied as a 3.0, got there, checked it out, poped the hood, saw the notorious "4.0 SOHC" and kept my mouth shut and quickly shut the hood.

Dealer sold it to me as though it was a 3.0, the bill even says 3.0!

And now I love my 4.0 SOHC.

I love my 4.0 SOHC.. and it does pretty good at higher RPM's.. but I miss my old 2000 with the 4.0 ohv.. had LOW END TORQUE UNLIKE the stupid 4.0 SOHC. :(

I was like "Whew more HP with my new truck" when I bought my 01.. little did I know but I was losing alot of low end Torque.. I like the peppiness of the ohv much more than the top end hp of the SOHC.... Just something to think about

Mine isnt, I have a FR 3.0, I wish it was a 2.3, so it would be easier to do a turbo.

I wanted to swap in an EJ25, but now I am thinking of an SR20, or RB25.
Less displacement, more torque FTW!

There are only two engines in the Ranger line worth noting. The 3.0 is not one of them.
Power of the 2.3+Gas millage of the 4.0=Fail!
Nuff said.

ok if your ranger doesnt atleast have the 4.0L OHV then it blows, b/c i have that and i still want more power so i am getting an sohc and slapping that in there b/c its a direct drop in to the trans mission $900 equals 50hp more i want atleast 230-250 in my ranger

Your high off your ***. the 3.0 is very durable.... but the 4.0 SOHC is just as serious, tough and reliable of an engine

i don't mean to offend you roddy1. i was just stating my opinion. i work on 5 sohc to 1 3.0 or ohv motor. i've done at least 20 sohc timing chains in the last year (most with under 100k) and i know people with sohc motors with under 100k (one with 62k) that have the timing chain noise already

theres one explorer i can think of with 185k on it and i have done 2 sets of chains on it so far. one at about 90 and one last week at 185

umm....i'm just gonna give some ford ranger facts...

01+ 4x4's are all standard 3.0, optional 4.0
01+ edges are all standard 3.0, optional 4.0
