Starter solenoid negative stud snapped
Hey everyone, I started the steps necessary to remove the transmission. When i first started I ran in to some problems. I have a 2001 ford ranger 2.5l Lima engine 2wd. I removed the positive cable to the solenoid that is on the starter housing, no problem. When I went to remove the negative cable, the nut that is attached to the solenoid snapped the stud off. I tried searching for a new solenoid and I can only find one online that is the one I need. All the other solenoids are the kind that attach to the fender. Am I going to have to buy a new starter when mine isn't even bad? Also my luck one of the starter bolts stripped the threads in the tranny housing so I am just going to retap it. The tranny is ready to come down now just waiting on a friend for some lifting support.

Don't know what the quality is like, but it's cheap enough, there should be an actual part number somewhere on your old one, if you Google that, others should come up.
They fit different starters, but the ends are not all the same, check yours and compare.
You would be better off using a heli-coil to fix your stripped thread.

Just want to mention depending on how far the nut is snapped you may still be able to use it. I can't see what it looks like without a picture, however I snapped a positive stud off on my jeep one time. I looked everywhere for a copper stud replacement or a new solenoid by itself. Had a hard time as most places wanted to sell a full starter motor. Anyways, I managed to pick up a nut coupler , and removed the retaining nut that holds the stud secure and then I just tightened the coupler down on the small few mm's of thread remaining and it worked perfect.
