How Do I install strobes on my Ranger

 

well where do you want them what kind do you want, could you be more detailed here. also welcome to the forum..also make a signature so we know what type of truck you got

 

What are they for?
Where do you want them?
What year & model ranger is it?
How much do you want tp spend?
How do you want to control them?

 

They are for show, something to add to the truck.

Well, I would like them to run the head lights.

I guess I would like to controll them by a switch in the car... actually controlling them by the panic button on the transmitter would be really cool.

Price is of no concern, I want to do it right.

 

Auto Zone has some cheapy strobe kits for this. I would recommend that since this is not for emergency vehicle use.

 

They actually have kits for this. hmmm thats interesting. I was un aware

I'm assuming you're aware that using strobes on the street is highly illegal, and in some states simply HAVING them is illegal if you're not an emergency vehicle. I always recommend checking your state and local laws for statutes related to equipping non-emergency vehicles with strobes.

 

Well, I have a big Yellow Nitrous Tank in my Z in the back window. You just don't use it when your no suposed to.

I got the kit, it was $24.00. The only problem is now it seems that there is no on off switch. There is some kind of loop that is on the controll module that sayes not to unplug unless you havce a contorller for it.

So, how do you tirn them on/off?

Are there 2 power wires, probably red and black? Black is ground, red goes to your switch, then to a fuse, and to your power source.

 

I have strobes on every light on my ranger, including the foglights. But honestly I want them off. IF someone who had the knowledge and could come to the area I live in was interested in correctly taking them off they could have the whole setup.

Well, my kit you have to drill a hole in the light housing, then put a rubber gromet in to to hold the light in place. Others just have them suspended. How far are you from Chattanooga TN?

 

He is about 271 miles or 4.5 hours (according to maps.com)

 

Mine has all the "Black box's" with the dials on them, I think I have a total of 8. It also has all the wiring, and they all go into a "switch" mounted under the hood. You look at my battery and it has more extra sh*t coming out of it than I know what to do with it. I also have blue ground effects that are going.

 

Thats crazy, the guy who had it before you really did it up nice! lol

 

haha.. i think strobes would look pretty cool, but again, if you accidentally flip that switch, you'd be screwed, haha

 

The switch for mine is under the hood so you wouldn't have to worry about that.

 

Go all out and get what I would use Whelen Strobes the 90 watt ones.

 

The ones with the little black boxes are the cheapy strobes. If it is only for show, that is all you need. I intentionally did not mention the *real* strobe systems like Whelen makes because it is not worth it for this purpose. If these strobes were for the purpose of clearing traffic and blocking the road, then a professional kit would be appropriate.

 

My dad and I had to install them on some pick-ups for construction work we placed them in the two front turn signals and the rear ones they turnned out good.

I would put them in the turn signal housing and If you get/have clearcorners it will look great.

i have that exact same set up and there is a seperate thing u can buy to control them or buy on little toggle switch to hook them up. when i have time tomorrow i will look at mine and to see how i hooked the switch up.

That simply can't be, at least not up this way. Every other Super-Duty I see on the road has strobes installed on brake and turn signal lights at the very least. In this area landscaping companies become plow companies in the winter and plow trucks are supposed to have a flashing light of some sort when working as a plow. If the strobes were illegal these guys would be in trouble. .. Now having a blue strobe/light, that's another story! Having a blue strobe probably gets you into impersonanting a police officer territory. But then again in NY blue = volunteer fire dept and is no problem. So A) I don't think the strobes are the problem. What color they are and when and where you operate them has a lot to do w/ it. And B) this all varries a lot by area. Definitely look into it..

 

It is the COLOR of the flashing light. That fact it is a stobe is actually irrelevant. It could be a strobes, a halogen light, a rotating light, a blinking LED, a glowing jelly donut, etc.

Amber flashing lights are a "caution" color used by contruction, mail delivery, snow removal, landscaping, etc. Pretty much anytime the vehicle presents a unique hazzard, you can use flashing amber lights. Some states require a permit, some don't. Most that require a permit don't really care and don't enforce it. Infact, they would probably look at you like you have 2 heads if you asked for one.

When you start making red, blue, green, or white flashing lights, it's a different story. Those colors are for emergency vehicles. The application of which varies state by state. Some states use blue for FF's. Some states use blue for police only. Some mix it all up for everyone. Either way, I can pretty much gaurantee that using red, blue, green, or white strobes is going to violate something.
