EDIT:not to thread jack but does anyone know if a pats steering column will work in a non-pats truck i dont have pats and dont know how common non-pats colums are and will it matter if the donner truck had or didnt have cruise i dont have cruise
You can remove the pats system from the console. Just make sure if your 5spd or auto to get the one for that transmission. Only time you need to swap anything over is if its an 98-03 going on a 04+ or vice versa.

fwiw, a mustang "head" can be put on a ranger column body and get tilt as well. however, it's a lot more involved mechanically and wiring. but it opens up a lot of different color choices for steering wheels.

My POS doesn't have tilt or cruise either. I might look into putting them in.

Anyone know how to swap in 2 extra doors so you can have a 4 door instead of 2? LOL

My 04 doesn't have tilt.. It also doesn't have power windows, power locks, or cruise control...

I was supprised when I bought it that it didn't have an 8-trac..

That's a damn good price for one that new. Swap will be even easier. Strictly bolt it. All you will need to swap is your ignition and pats system over to the new one and bolt it back up. You wont even need to take the steering wheel off since it has the newer style air bag. However if that air back is blow from a wreck you can just put your air bag in it. Mine already has cruise on it so I cant help you there lol.

Yeah I had read that. However I wasn't looking for anything crazy. Just as strait of a swap as possible. However the color choice on steering wheel is only true for the 03 and older rangers. In 04 the rangers got a different kind of air bag.

Cant help you on the 4d thing, but definitely get tilt! As far as cruise try and find a wrecked truck with it and snag the 04+ steering wheel and the cruise control stuff and it should be mostly a bolt in i believe. Gotta snake the wiring to the steering wheel though.

Tilt is a great thing. I didn't need it in my 95 though. I think it really made an impact in the 04+. The seats are thicker so they make you sit up higher. If I was skinny then it wouldn't of been much of an issue, but I'm not lol.

It was rare for the mustang not to have it, but most people who bought basic trucks usually didn't need it.

My 85 Bronco has it but my truck doesn't lol. I would def. like to do this swap but I think I'd get even more enjoyment out of cruise control!

Here's a how to I wrote:

Explorers and Rangers pretty much have the same column. Also there really shouldn't be a difference between the manual and automatic column except for the shroud. If you don't need the shifter then just take that part off.

tilt really wont ever wear out. Its not something that is used much. You could probably put over a million miles on a vehicle before it would do that.

Yeah I don't see that every breaking, even with hard core offroading. Maybe if you hit a boulder doing 60 and broke it with your body hitting it, I think you would have bigger problems then though lol

yes you would. I meant more along the lines of actually spending the money to do it, not it breaking

Its not an expensive swap at all. You can find the columns for 30-100 bucks normally. If you have an auto its even cheaper because there is tons of those. Manual is a little harder to find, but its worth it.

I've not seen anything really different between manuals and automatic columns. An automatic just has more stuff on it that you can take off, the only thing you need to do is switch out the top part of the shroud.
