He doesn't mean taking the spring flange off and putting one back on, he means taking it off and putting a standard flange back on in place of the spring flange.
The engine flexes and moves. If the exhaust doesn't have some way to relieve the pressure of it, it will break things like that exhaust manafold. The spring flange acts like a bushing in the exhaust system.

How is a 50s exhaulst system diffrent then todays? He just put it on last year.
You showed me 1 pic of a cracked header that "might" have been due to no spring bolt. I see tons of cars without them driving
