Check the link above to see the truck. looking for a truck to last me about a year tops hopefully more. Went to test drive this 1988 2.9 4x4 5 speed ranger with like 165000k the other day. Truck was ok but the transmission grinds when you shift into 4th gear and I heard a whirring noise when downshifting into 3rd once, the owner says it’s a bearing I forget which one. Seems like it’s on its way out. But from my research the reputation of these trucks is they are pretty indestructible. So I don’t know. I’m on the fence about it because it’s a nice truck for a good deal. But I’m coming from a jeep that’s been abused for probably 15 years of its life so I don’t want to be in a pos death trap. Let me know what you guys think.

 

It could possibly be the throwout bearing for the whirring, but not the grind to forth. That makes me think a bent shift fork or bad synchro. But I'm just guessing from your explanation. If it's clean and you like it, make an offer after calling a transmission shop to get an estimate. Good luck.
