Turn signal switch question.

hello everyone, first post. A friend just gave me his 2003 2.3 ranger to my son for his soon to be 16th bday. So we are tinkering here and there to fix it up. The turn signal switch won’t reset when completing a turn, left or right turns. I’ve looked at a few other post on here and am just trying to get clarification. Is there a single pin on the switch that protrudes to reset the switch or one pin for left turns and one pin for right turns? I’m wondering if it’s the switch that needs replacing or the tabs on the steering wheel column. For the life of me I can’t find the name of the part that it would be if it were the piece on the steering wheel column either. Could someone please tell me what that piece is called. Im guessing the easiest way to diagnose ,is to simply remove the turn signal lever and see if the pin is still attached right?I’m not a mechanic so please be gentle. I’m a google and YouTube pro though, and I have more courage than sense when it comes to fixing stuff on vehicles.....what’s the worst that could happen right?lol
