We all knew it was coming........
The day they quit production of the Ford Ranger. We knew it was coming, after years of MINOR cosmetic changes and stripping of options, it was only a matter of time.
I really don't mind it though. Seems Ford will be sinking more time and money into their F-150, and after seeing the new redesigned 09 F150, I'll buy one. The Ranger is a good little truck, but I guess here in North America, it's just not doing Ford any good. All good things must eventually come to an end, and unfortunately, it has to be the Ford Ranger.

Automotive News is reporting that the plant responsible for building the engines for the Ford Ranger small pickup and the assembly plant itself will both shutter their doors by the end of 2009. The industry publication is extrapolating that with those two integral plants shut down, the Ranger won’t find a new home anywhere else and won’t get a redesign. The larger F-150 is the best-selling truck in the country and is due to be redesigned next year. Expect Ford to put all its dollars into that. And you thought the John Mellencamp Silverado ads were omnipresent.

Reported by AutoNews, the 2009 Ford Ranger has been axed from production, saving Ford over $2 Billion dollars UAW savings. The Ranger factory, based in St. Paul, Minnisota, were lucky enough to have the closure date pushed back to 2009, saving many of them their jobs. However that will all be put to an end in 2009. For you Ranger fands, the small pickup days are over.

Well, the Rangers have been getting bigger every year and my 2003 Ranger Edge 4 dr is almost as if not as big as an early F150. I guess Ford will still make the Mazda and that is a Ranger with a Mazda name tag. They own about 34% of Mazda anyway which is controlling interest so they are in control there.
Not to fear, you can still have a Forzda or Mazord. Which ever you wish to call it. I like Mazord. Or, just save a Ranger badge and put it on the Mazda.
Don't worry, there is a s**t pot full of Rangers for us yet.
I plan on mine lasting until death do us part.

I love ya mate.. but..
If I don't need a v8, why is it I'm putting one in? If it were an option, the Rangers sales might have improved.
Zach.. The UAW didn't loose the Ranger. Ford gave up on it years ago.
When Ford ' upsized ' the Exploder off the Ranger Platform, it was over.

YOU need a V8, WE dont. I m happy with my engine.
of course sales would have improved, but would it have been worth it to ford? think like a corporation and I am sure the rangers isnt getting dropped solely because of sales. they have a different market focus...
and technically, you dont NEED it. you want it

I love my Ranger, but I can't say I didn't see it coming. Why buy a truck that has about 1/2 the payload, but gets the same mileage as an F-150, and is only a few grand cheaper??? Hell, if I'd have known the mileage sucked so bad, I would've bought the 150 in 03 when I got my Ranger. I love my truck, but there's no more Rangers going to be in my driveway.

rolsmojave3, my 03 Ranger Edge is about 1 foot longer than my '93 Ranger I sold when I bought the 03. It's also wider and a lot taller but I didn't measure it. I have a friend with a 1987 F150 I can match it up to for size if you wish.
Do you want me to go to my friends house and measure the '93 and my 03 and the 87 F150 to my 03 to prove it or do you want to just let it die?
If Ford does anything I think they will be pushing the Mazord and may sell them in the Ford dealerships. Why would they resurect the Ranger after letting it die. The Mazda is almost exactly a Ranger. There is very little difference and if the Ranger is dead then the Mazord is a Ranger with a different badge.
If you want a Ranger then buy a Mazda.

Carl, most of the changes are in the body what not -- bumpers are different in front for instance. Some frame changes but not much and mainly to the front rails to accomodate the IFS vs. the TTB.
The Ranger is not in anyway close to the size or weight of a 1987 F-150. I had one too and it was a boat. Frame spacing, track width, etc. all smaller on the Ranger.

Look at Wikipedia. Their article states that Ford Motor Company directly stated that the Ranger would remain in the lineup for 2009. It could just mean that they're going to be selling leftovers, but it's still hope.
Sometimes I think there are retards in charge of the company. Dropping the lightning and now this are just bonehead moves that deserve a kick in the face. Hell, they are having sales drops in the truck because they won't do anything to try and stop it! No redesigning in the past 15 years is why it's falling. Bring back the Thunderbolt package... A low down Ranger designed to handle with a 300hp 4.6 and a standard tranny, and there's your Dakota killer. If they would honestly try to save the truck, and not be afraid to do anything, they could have something. I would love it if they would pretend they were dodge for a minute and shoe-horn a 400+hp motor into every car and truck they make. FMC needs to grow a pair.
