Left my dad stranded today, but not really Ford's fault, the doofus mechanic who installed the fuel pump for the original owner, didn't tighten the clamp up, or didn't bother.

The nut and bolt is missing entirely _ I think it was just shoved on ! (note that the original factory clamp is still there !)
I removed the bed today to give it a good inspection in that area.
The fuel line needs replacing too, the end is all soft and rotten.

The place, which I think is out of business now, was called "Revved Up Automotive" in Victoria BC Canada _ don't go there.

Fuel was everywhere _ it only happened a few minutes from home, just think of what could have happened at speed.

Hooray for someone who appreciates what they got for good deal. I got mine cheap too and in spite of its faults, I am really enjoying the first supercab I've had.

 

When my drivers door is open without the key inserted and in key removed position it keeps on chiming door is closed. I am going to find a way to get rid of it permanently. That and the bed I can see shake as I''m going down the road. But its a supercab for a super deal and a reliable truck thats already got 2000 more miles than when I bought it a month ago.

 

In order of purchase
97 ranger 4 cyl 5spd so base it viny instead of carpet and came with no power steering 94 ranger 4cyl 5spd average with a great cd player I miss as it need fuel pump
2000 2.5 5spd super cab good runner with few more bug to make it more reliable
Now that weather has cooled down to 30 and below, the 2000's gas mileage has gone down to barely 20mpg, not good for a 4cy 5sp. I changed out the water in cooling system for antifreeze a month ago and seemed like it might have air pocket, but it's run fine, just takes temp gauge time to warm up and doesnt always fully. I'm guessing it needs a thermostat or it has a blocked radiator, as the bottom radiator hose is cold to touch. So I'm stuck with it unless we get a weather miracle, but the amazing part is it run fine, has plenty of pep and has no trouble climbing hills.

Only thing I can think of HATING in this my last Ranger, is the low power coming out of these small V-6s !

A V-8, when the Explorer got it, would have made the Ranger a GREAT Truck !

OK, I would accept 2.8L TURBO DIESEL ! LOL !

 

Dude why did you buy a ranger when you knew about the engine size and did you not test drive it or research what other owners thought about their performance. Second why not buy the 4.o, but the only thing I've heard about this is that it suck down gas really quick especially with auto tranny, so your losing performance with the auto and sacrificing mileage. I have 2.5 I use for hauling building materials, with good power and good gas mileage and 2.3s all with standards that get 25 to 27 mpg. If you wanted a power truck you should have bought the 150, with an 8 and then had that to complain about.

its a 3.0L
it's a shitty 4r44e transmission
that its a step side
that the drivers side leaf spring is sagging out
that the doors freeze shut
that it doesnt have the 5 button keyless number pad
that it doesnt have the opening extended cab doors
that if has so much rust especially in the cab corners
that it ended up costing me so much money

 

Take some Armor All, that one with the silicon in it that makes things really slippery.
Apply it to your door rubbers and where they meet up on the body.
That works for me in the winter with freezing doors.

As the man once said, you pays your money and you takes your chances. Glad you got it, cheap and love it. I've had some good and great cheap mostly and I've found with cars and other things life, some of the best things I've gotten have been those that come to me, and when I try too hard it's not always for the best. Example, second to last ranger great looking on top but rotten frame and wiring. On the other end, one of the best deals I got as a gift was an 89 escort, a buddy was offered for his help, he turned it down, something about the hatchback rotted out, it was one of the ballsiest little, fuel sipping cars I ever had.

 

any kind of silicone on the door seal rubber will help with the sticking door. I live in the northeast and that can be an issue here....the silicone works well. As far as the rest....I'm still not drivin a jap truck!! And that means more to me than any other issue! I learned about the bed rails rusting so the one I bought, had new bed rails installed before I bought it. A local guy undercoated it and I hope to not have that issue. Rest of her seems to have normal 17 year rust but the body is clean. Regular stops in the winter at the carwash ( I use the manual sprayer) and rust has never been an issue for me. I wash well under the bumper and inside the wheel wells all the way around.

 

I acquired two old Rangers in 2017 and after I read all this, how is it possible all I can hate on is the gas mileage.

Ford Listen up, we do not want a Car/Truck... we want the old Ranger Size, Style, and Utility, back !

The thing about Gas Mileage has always been a problem but some aren't too bad. My '95, 2WD, 5-sp, got 24 average mpg on a regular basis, my '88 with the 2.9, got 18 at best and with a 5.0 conversion, got 20 mpg, go figure. Then there is this one I have now, an '03, 3.0, 5-sp, I get at best 20, not often, but usually average less than 18 mpg.

Most of us like our Rangers, and accept the one thing that will cause us heart ache... MPG !

Now there is always a Diesel !

Lay off the chips and pop and the inside won't keep getting smaller, if you know what I mean.

 

I get almost as good mileage with my 4.0 5 speed with 3.55 gears and 235/70 16 tires as I got with my 2.4 automatic PT Cruiser so I'm not complaining there. The 3.3 Kia Sorento AWD is about the same too.
Really nothing to hate about my 23 year old Ranger any more since I put on a set of 1998 mirrors and replaced the shift lever with a custom one that is shorter and bent back a bit farther so I don't stuff my thumb into the cigarette lighter every time I jam it into first - - - . I get a bit of gear noise up through the solid stick in 1st that I didn't get with the highly isolated rubber mounted factory shifter, but the shifts are a lot more positive now. I can only HOPE I'll own another vehicle in the future that is as trouble-free as this little ranger has been - 368000km and counting and still about 98% original. New clutch and U Joints, upgraded front brakes, finally replaced the rears last fall, replaced Cam Synchronizer, Rad, and fan belt tensioner, as well as the rear shocks over the last 2 years - otherwise it's as it left the factory

I have an extending cab and compared to my old Mazda B2200, the Ford interiors are small though.
I had quite the squeeze getting my 6 foot frame in one of the jump seats when company was over, where I would have a lot less trouble in the B2200.

 

I find it a bit cramped, I need 200 pounds near the tailgate to offset the winch, it rides like it has iron wheels and my Sportster won't fit without the tailgate down.
The cure for all that is to use the F150, and use the Ranger when I want four wheel drive. I do love my Ranger.

I hate that it was still running strong before my timing chain started singing at 195,000 miles.
I hate that I am/was limited to 90MPH on an open desert highway.
I hate that I use my rig as a truck and the paint gets scratched.
I hate that my alignment was off only by 3/8" after 15 years.
I hate how quiet it is inside the cab that now I can't blame truck noise for not being able to hear her.
I hate the fact things are easier to fix if they wear out on my truck than first thought. I like a challenge...like changing a starter on a 5.7 Tundra.
