hmmm...when I was in Jax, NC on Camp Lejuene we use to take our trucks and some of the hummers to a test/recovery area on base right down the road from our barracks. But that was back in 88-92. Off base I dont know...never went that far to go off road.

We had a nice course at New River, back in the late 70's, early 80's.

As you approach the New River gate, there is (was) a school on the 1st road to the right. Turn there and head left for the trees BEFORE the school, should still be a path. (This is NOT the road by the exchange that goes to the barracks area, WAY before that one) The first mudhole was by far the worst. IF you made it through there, the rest was fun. It went all the way to Verona on the air station side of 17 and almost all the way to the creek that is straight out from the marina, across the small bay to the right. That creek goes to Verona too and had outrageous sized gar. You can take jonboat all the way from the marina to Verona on that creek. That's a great fishing spot that noone ever used to fish. Dunno about now.

That area has grown so much since I was stationed there. I lived out in Half Moon after I moved from Richlands. I used to run the logging roads out that way, until I snapped a driveshaft on an intersection (the graded dirt road levels can vary by a foot or more). Fun times.
