Over the years the models have changed obviously, but for the most part the XL is the base trim (most inexpensive) and the XLT is the upgraded trim. The XLT's come with the harnesses to be able to add on all the options, while the XL's have harnesses that only have the basic options. So really the XLT has the option to add all the options/upgrades if that makes any sense. Then there is your FX4, Sport, Level 2... "packages".

My XLT is two wheel drive, 2.3 4 banger, auto, carpeting, nice interior trim, noise insulation, AM-FM CD player, chrome bumper, aluminum wheels and nice white letter tires.......no cruise, no tilt, no power windows or locks....just they way I want it. Overall it's a nice and comfortable package. My friend has a plain Jane model...and it's well,.... a plain Jane truck, to describe it, it's a basic work truck.

X2, all depends on how much you want to pay for those letters.

I had alway thought that the XLT was the top of the line, then FORD, in its infinite wisdom, came out with specials models; I guess they weren’t making enough.
