I have a 1998 Ranger XLT 4X4 that has a non catalytic converter Y pipe and two inline catalytic converters after the flange. Does anyone know if you can replace the original with a two converter Y Pipe? I have not been able to locate a replacement Y pipe which is cracked and non repairable.so if anyone knows where to locate a replacement that would also be helpful.

 

A good exhaust shop can probably build a new y pipe cheaper than what the cat style would cost.

 

I was able to get a two converter front pipe new for 148.00 unfortunately limited muffler shops in my area estimates have been over $900.00 for the work. Would be helpful to know if anyone has changed out the non converter Y pipe for the Converter Y pipe and replaced the rest of the exhaust system to match. Mine is all welded so individual component replacement is not an option

 

The crack in the Y Pipe may have occurred due to the previous repair job (welded). Not having the proper exhaust hangers can cause increased vibration resulting in another stress crack. I know Walker shows a diagram for each car/truck including every single component making up the whole exhaust system. You can determine if any hangers are missing or important connections that allow movement. I know after the cat pipe, there should be a O ring connection which allows small movement in the system which is critical. Make sure your motor mounts arent shot either.

Ontario Exhaust sells the 2 converter pipe system on ebay for less than 200 and its good fitment. They are more like a high flow cat. Than, match it up with the compatible Walker component exahust pieces which is reasonable in pricing (if you want to bolt it all together yourself saving money). Of course this raises questions such as placement of the O2 sensors with this different setup? Just compare the Walker diagrams to see what the differences may be. O2 sensor wire extensions are in existence if needed.

 

Thanks I actually had gotten the two cat pipe from them. When I realized it was wrong I contacted them to return it. It turns out they have the correct Y pipe just not listed. Returned the other waiting for the replacement.

 

I have a 97 with the 4.0 and the cats are on the intermediate pipe. When i got my cat pipe from Ontario Exaust, i noticed that only the back cat had cat material in it. The front one was empty. I do notice a more rotten smell as the efficiancy of cleaning up the COs is less. But i consider it higher flow and adds a nice exhaust note.
