2000 Ranger Instrument Cluster Swap

I have a 2000 Ranger 2wd with the 2.5l. Been driving me crazy that I have no tach. A buddy of mine gave me a instrument cluster with a tach but couldn't remember what vehicle it came from. Plugged it into the truck and well the tach works, but the speedometer doesn't, My check engine light was on at the time of the swap which ended up being the door ajar light in the new cluster, so on and so forth.

If someone could point me in the right direction of wiring in the new cluster that would be greatly appreciated. Been searching the web for a few hours now but I'm leary because I do not know the exact year of the new cluster and I've found more than a few that states diffenent wires for the same plug port number.

Are there any serials on the cluster that would help identify it for schematic puproses?. It is from a Ford, 4WD ranger or Explorer I'm assuming. Not sure if the year of the cluster is a factor or not.

Ue a dash mounted tach.
You can get cheap message at Walmart or get a good end at Summit Racing.

I am converting from a cluster that has a tach to one without and going the dash. Noted unit.

I've thought about a dash mounted tach but I'd prefer the cleaner look of a all in one cluster. Don't want to much clutter on the dash, as is all my switches for my audio system are hidden and out of sight but in arms reach. Didn't like my gps being stuck to the windsheild so I got a touch screen Alpine head unit with built in navigation.

There is also a gauge pod for the steering column or the windshield pillar that can hold a tach ?

I have never been a advocate for cluster tach that is why I suggest the other tach.

Why do you want a tach ?

Luck with it, there are people here that know the wire inside-out so hang in there.

Its just something I'd like to have, Had my truck for several years now and just by the mph and the sound of the engine, I know when to shift, but like I said its just something I'd like to have.

Like I stated in my first post, I am just looking for the plug pin outs for explorer or 4wd rangers that came stock with the cluster I have so I can cross check them with the exsisting pin outs of the cluster in my ranger. I respect your opinion about other tach varients but I've got my heart set on just swapping out the gauge cluster. Just need the info and/or documents to help me to reconfigure the plugs.

When I did this swap on my Gauge Cluster for one with a tachometer everything lined up, no need to splice and rewire the plug in pins. I got mine out of a 98 expo though so. If I find something I'll forward it to ya.

Just asking, have you searched ?

There is info on the site, I have read it !

Added: I just ran through the how-to's without success, I remember some postings on this problem, sorry I can't help more.

Maybe one of the wiring gurus will pop in.
