Hi. I own a 2006 Ford Ranger with a bumper hitch (attached photos taken from above and below the bumper). I've used it to haul my log splitter in the past. When i recently when to rent a towable power auger (again, not a huge load like a trailer etc.) at my local big box store, they refused to rent to me, saying that a bumper hitch would prevent free movement of the towed item. I saw this on Harbor Freight (https://www.harborfreight.com/5000-l...ver-69670.html) and would like to know if it's suitable and easy to install with my type of bumper. I'm very handy and tool-savy, but don't usually work on my cars or truck. Any advice or things to look for is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Theodore
Go to your local pick and pull/ junk yard. I found a like new class 3 trailer hitch cheap.$40 i thick it was. Dont waste your money on that Harbor junk, its still being bolted to you bumper not the frame of the truck.
The hitch listed on HF is the same dam thing you already have on your bumper. It's just going to bolt below your existing hitch on the bumper which you will have to remove.
I'm sure the current setup would handle the log splitter just fine, unless it is some behemoth type of splitter.
As s@RoseBud68 find a class III hitch from a ranger at a j/y or spend 100-150 bucks for one.
The difference between the 2 hitches is tongue wt. Bumpers are generally tongue weighted at 300-500 lbs. and a class III TW is 350-800 lbs.
