3 to 2 bulb setup for tail lights

G/f bought me '06 tails for Christmas. I have a '99 so I have the 3 bulbs. Can I just get the rear wiring off a '00+? The tail lights unplug in the back for putting a "T" in for trailer wiring. I didn't know if it would be plug and play or if the wiring is completely different. I've been looking at threads on how to rewire it but didn't see anything on just changing the rear harness out.

I believe people have done that but you could also just cut out for the third light.

here is a suggestion i have been working on someone chime in on this one. i have been working on how to convert 99 to 04 tails and here is a solution i think. take the lt grn/org tap into lt grn of left bulb install diod inline with lt grn before splice.next wire org/lt blue to lt grn on right tail bulb install diode inline with right lt grn tail bulb before splice. not to sure on what diode to use though. i have not tried this mod and i am not held responsible should u try to use this. just tossing this idea out there

theres a how to..

here:
I nor ******************** is responsible for anything that should happen when or after you do this. If you decided to do this it is as your own risk.

A STEP-BY-STEP WAY TO DO THIS:

If you don't like the look of the taillights in the 1993 to 1999 Rangers, the ones with the seperate turn signal bulb, then I have the solution. This will convert your taillights to 2000 or newer taillights, the ones with the turn signal integrated into the taillight/brake bulb. This takes care of 2 things if you don't have a trailer plug. TO INSURE PROPER FUNCTION, FOLLOW EVERY STEP!!

1. First thing you need to do is to go get yourself a trailer wiring harness kit (the kit with the "T" connector that converts the 5 wire setup to a 4 wire for the trailer lights). I got a Hoppy brand from AutoZone for $30.00. I am sure that you could get them off eBay for cheaper. *IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE SKIP THIS STEP!!! YOU ALREADY HAVE WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS STEP!!!*

2. Acquire 2000 or newer set of taillights for your truck.

3. Remove the taillights from your truck. Make sure that the light sockets plug into the new taillights.

4. *I believe that the 2000 to 2004 taillights have the same back basket as the 1993 to 1999 taillights IF SO SKIP THIS STEP AND CONTINUE TO STEP 5* The only light socket that you MIGHT have a problem fitting correctly is the reverse light socket. If so, cut the wires to it and the turn signal socket and switch them. Put the turn signal socket on the reverse wires and the reverse socket on the turn signal wires. DO THIS FOR BOTH SIDES!! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD CONNECTIONS AND TAPE THE CONNECTIONS TO PREVENT WATER SHORTING OUT YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM!!

5. Tape over the turn signal bulb (WHICH SHOULD STILL BE IN THE LIGHT SOCKET!!) so it cannot be seen blinking. Wire tie it in the bed side so it will not fall out while driving. YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE OLD TURN SIGNAL SOCKET AND BULB INSTALLED, IF NOT THE TURN SIGNALS WILL FAST BLINK!! OR USE AN EP27 FLASHER INSTEAD OF THE STOCK FLASHER AND REMOVE THE EXTRA BULB!!

6. Cut the GREEN wire, far enough behind the bulb socket so you can attach it to another wire, hooked to the tail/brake light bulb socket. Tape the end up that goes into the wiring harness because you wont need it anymore. DO THIS FOR BOTH SIDES!!!

7. Unplug the wire connector behind the rear bumper that goes to the taillights and install the "T" trailer harness. After the "T" connector there is 5 wires going to another little black box. That box converts the system to a 4 wire system for the trailer lights. LEAVE IT ATTACHED!!

8. Tap into a turn signal wire, LEFT or RIGHT, in the trailer plug (AFTER THE LITTLE BLACK BOX THAT CONVERTS IT TO A 4 WIRE SYSTEM!!!) wires and run it to the respective taillight (LEFT TURN SIGNAL WIRE TO THE LEFT TAILLIGHT). Hook this wire into the green wire that comes out of the tail/brake light socket.

9. REPEAT THE LAST STEP FOR THE OTHER LIGHT THAT YOU HAVEN'T DONE!!

10. WIRE TIE ALL LOSE WIRES UP AND OUT OF THE WAY AS YOU ARE DONE WITH THE WIRES!! PUT THE TRAILER PLUG WERE YOU WOULD LIKE IT TO BE FOR EASY ACCESS WHEN YOU DECIDE TO HAUL A TRAILER!!

11. Install the bulb sockets into there correct spot in the new taillights.

12. Install the new taillights.

13. Check all connections and make sure they are connected properly.

14. Test to make sure they work properly.

I modded some 01 tails onto my 96 by adding a 2nd bulb hole in the red section for the turn signal bulb.
The only wiring I had to do was lengthen the reverse bulb to reach the top of the 01 housing.

The 06's have the reverse section lower, so you might not even have to do any wiring, just add the 2nd opening in the red section.

Well I have a 2 bulb wiring harness from the junkyard. Gonna plug it in and see if it will work or not. I don't want to do the trailer harness thing. That just doesn't sound clean and I want it to be factory looking cause that's just the way I am.

Tools:wire splices 2
wire strippers
electrical tape

I will not be held responsible for this mod should u try it but after extensive review of 99 and 2000 wiring diagrams i have a mod that wont cost u 3 0 dollars for that box but free. thi mod applies to 99 rangers only and maybe 98 not sure. but here goes. lt grn of left tail lamp cut and T into yellow wire from trailer harness. Now go to right lamp cut lt grn wire and T into dk green wire of trailer harness tuck remainder of wires away with elecrical tape they wont be used. That is all there is to it . This should work due to the fact that between 99 and 2000 they only changed the routing of the wires and kept the same exact components also change out flasher to ep27 if u havent already done so on another led or light mod.Otherwise u will get rapid flashing when u use turn signal. Wanna really go hard core factory? Run a dk blu/white wire from left rear bulb were the lt green wire is to fuse 3 in fuse junction panel. then run a brn/yel wire from right rear bulb were its lt green wire is to fuse 7 in fuse junction panel. Thats all oh yeah tape any remaining wires ot of the way . Anyone wanna chime in on this write up?

How about this...

Put your directionals in the backup light socket, make it an Amber Bulb.
Put your tail/brake in the std spot.
Take your back up light wire and pull it back to the engine bay add a relay and a set of 55w back up lights at the rear bumper. Use the backup light wire to activate the relay and run a new fused power wire to the aftr mkt backup lights.

Separate directionals are safer to run, you can see them easier especially if they are amber instead of red like your brake lights.

Luck...

I finally got time to look at the truck. On my '99, there are 6 wires going into the plug from the truck. On the '03 harness I have there are 5 wires. It is the same kind of plug but the wires are in different locations with in the plug. I'm gonna hopefully move the wires around on the '03 harness so they work right with the '99 harness.

Question is whats the extra wire on the '99 harness? How have a wire for ground, reverse, brake, left turn, and right turn. What else would there be? I'll figure it out later when I get under the truck more since I'll have my dad help me but does anyone have a clue?

If I get this to work right without having to cut and splice stuff, I'll make a how-to on it to make things easy for the next person who wants to do this.

I see. I've made my mind up not to do it the way the how-to states. That just sounds like a "_____ rigged" kind of setup.

There needs to be a wire for the Back-up Lights too.
’06 Lights have a backup light.

I have not read the “How-To” but the directional wires at the Multifunction Module, inside of the ’99 steering column needs to be rewired to allow for the Brake and Directional to work on the same bulb; probably just a rewire of the connector.

On the ’99 you have the directional separate on each light, 2 extra wires.

Here is an idea see if the ’06 type Multifunction Module will fit the ’99 steering column, then all you need to do besides getting an 06 Module, is ring-out the wires to the rear.

If you do a rewire, how do you eliminate the directional wires and make the Brake into Brake/Directionals?

Wondering if the ’99 Module can just be rewired for Brake/Directional ?
Get some wiring schematics and start reading.

I did this to my ’06 LED Tail Lights:

Put the directionals in the backup light socket, made it an Amber Bulb.
Put my tail/brake in the std spots.
Take your back up light wire and pull it back to the engine bay add a relay and a set of 55w back up lights at the rear bumper. Use the backup light wire to activate the relay and run a new fused power wire to the aftr mkt backup lights.

Separate directionals are safer to run, you can see them easier especially if they are amber instead of red like your brake lights.

i have already done this mod i got the wiring diagrams for 99 and 00 the only changes they made was to run two seperate leads for turn signal from tow fuses the brake is already wired in to column switch. The way the 99 is wired from factory it has a brake circuit that passes through the turn signal switches. they are already wired for it!! The way its done is to
cut the Lt Grn/Org and Org/Lt Blue wires at the drives kick panel coming from the tail lamps. Connect the Lt Grn/Org wire to fuse 7 and the Org/Lt Blue to fuse 3. Then go to the tail lamps splice Lt Grn from left tail to Lt Grn/Org from body.Lt Grn from right tail to Org/Lt blue

I decided just to put holes in the housings since I don't want to run wires. My '06 tails already had holes on them for strobes so I am just gonna make the holes bigger for the turn signals. Anyone have pics of it on '06 tails?
