My 4wd light wont stay on when engaged in 4wd. The only time it lights up is when the transmission is in neutral, but when u put it into gear after switching to 4wd, the light goes out. I also can't engage 4wd while im driving down the road. If I switch it to 4wd it wont take it until I pull out the fuse and put it back in, then it will only work a few times and eventually will have to do the same thing again. I carried to a shop to have it diagnosed because I figured it either had to be the module or the computer but when they plugged into the system, it wouldn't let them read anything. They replaces the fuse and it still would not allow anyone to access it. I'm thinking this means the module itself is bad since that is where you have to access the diagnostic system. Has anyone had this problem or know anyone who has?

Yes. My buddy's 01 4.0 automatic 4wd Edge has a problem right now.

His won't even self-test the 4hi and 4lo lights in the dash with key on.

He took it a hot$#!t place and their analyzer "won't communicate" with the Shift Control Module. They can normally command shifts, etc. with their analyzer.

My cursory searches at some Ranger, Explorer and other 4wd forums seems to say the 01/02 Shift Control Modules have a spotty reliability record.

We're going to compare part numbers next week (when he returns) to see if mine will work in his truck (for troubleshooting purposes only). I may just slap his into my truck instead (less work, and I know mine works).

i had the switch and module fry in mine. i wouldnt self test or anything. thank god it got stuck in 2wd

 

Shift motor is a common problem.

IIRC, you can remove the shift motor and use a pair of needle nose pliers to force it into 4X4 if need be.

A dealer is the only place that will read the codes with out a doubt.

 

I just had mine checked at a ford dealership and they couldnt read any codes from the module either. They worked on it for a couple hours and it was getting close to 5 o'clock so they ran out of time. They said that it would be either one of two things, the control module or the brake light swithc on the pedal. I replaced the brake light switch since it was the cheaper of the two and still can't get it to work. They did get it into 4wd a few times and said they did this by applying the emergency brake which led them to think that it might be the brake light switch. I am thinking that this means that the motor on the transfer case is good and the control module is bad. Does this sound correct to ya'll or does it? They eliminated the selector switch as being the problem so this is really all that is left unless they dont know any more than i do which is highly unlikely. lol. By the way, i really appreciate all the replies to this ad. Thanks alot guys.

 

I know looking at the Explorer Forums the '02 'Sploders had an issue where they would fry the module with a battery disconnected. My Ranger (01) was having similar issues as described by Earl43p and when I searched for the part number off my module, I found it wasn't even listed on online parts sites nor in the dealership system. They had to do a nomenclature and year search to locate the new part number. Supposedly the modules have been revised and the newer part number is supposed to be the 'improved' version. So to compare your part number Earl, my not work out so well. I've had my new module in since Mid-Dec and It is still working fine. I have even had the battery disconnected for some time for maintenance and I have replaced the battery so if that was the cause of the first one going out, this one is indeed doing well.
