4X4 Not Working - 1993 Ford Ranger

Hi

i have a 1993 Ford Ranger 4.0 v6 automatic with manual locking hubs.

my 4x4 did work before with the manual locking hubs. Today I tried it and the 4x4 light would not come on. I pushed the button several times and nothing happened. Does anyone know why it won’t work?

im leaning towards something more electrical because I don’t feel like I drove it enough for something to mechanically how wrong but if anyone knows let me know

Usual cause of no 4x4 lights is that the shift motor on the back of the transfer case is not working

Couple of fuses to check first
In engine fuse box its a 20amp fuse Elec Shift
In cab check fuse 7, 15amp

If both fuses are OK then get under the truck and tap on the shift motor then see if it starts to work again, its temporary if it does, it means the brushes on the motor are worn out

There is a thread here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...-motor.123542/

That has pictures of the shift motor and its parts

There is a contact wheel inside the unit that moves when the motor turns the transfer case shift rod, this contact wheel is what turns on the 4x4 lights and tells the 4x4 controller when transfer case is in the correct position

Read here for 1994 and earlier 4x4 control module testing: https://www.therangerstation.com/how...is-1994-older/

Do you happen to have a fuse box manual handy? I want to make sure I got everything right.

Thank you,

I looked at my fuses and they look good. Must be the other thing that's the problem.

I'm having the same problem w my 93 Ranger Help
My 4x4 light comes on when depressed, but it doesn't engage front wheels. I guess I'll start w the fuses. How do I know if I have manual hubs?

Manual hubs have a "lever" on each wheel that you manually turn to Lock and unLock that wheel to the axle

Look here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...uto-manual.JPG
On the left is the Auto Hub cover
On the right is the manual hub cover, where is says WARN is the "lever" part that you manually turn to lock and unlock that wheel

Shift motor issue will usually cause the 4WD lights to not work at all, or the 4WD lights will flash when you try to select another setting
It is possible but less likely for the shift motors actuator to get stripped so its moving but not changing transfer cases shift rod

If you look under the truck while its moving in 4WD and the front drive shaft is turning then transfer case IS in 4WD like the light shows so not a shift motor issue, its a hub lock issue
