'84 Ranger Wipers - Short Circuit

I've asked this before, but now am really digging for a solution.

There is a short circuit which appears to be between the fuse box and a junction on the firewall before the wiper motor. The Haynes manual shows an 'interval governor' in the circuit for the Intermittent function. Is this some hidden box behind the fuse box? Will I need to pull the dash apart to find it?

The wipers won't work at Low or Intermittent, and blow the circuit breaker after a minute at the High position. There is a constant drain of about .3 volts. I've tested the column switch and it seems ok.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Gordon

The closest info I have for that part is from an 89 manual. It shows the Interval Wiper Governor Module sharing a bracket with the Rear ABS Module under the center of the dash. The 89 Governor is a little larger than a common automotive relay and looks like it has 9~10 wires going to it. As you might expect, the wires connect to power, ground, the wiper switch and the wiper motor. Maybe that will help, maybe not.

Hi Bob,

Thank you, it did help identify the module. I just removed it tonight - on the driver's side door pillar, behind the dash, about the height of the upper door hinge. Hard to get to. Due to a leak in the upper corner firewall/windshield, water had entered the module, so it's finished. There's even a high tide mark inside the plastic box.

Here's my electrical question. (Not my strong point). The Haynes manual has the wiring diagram and all the wires and color codes seem correct.

Does it make sense that I can bypass the module with direct wiring and still retain high and low speed wipers? Or could the low speed be governed by the module?

Thanks, any educated guesses welcome,

Gordon
