96 Ranger 4wd works but light don't
I have a 96 ranger and the 4wd and 4wd low light come on during start up, but when I turn the switch to engauge the 4wd the light doesn't come on. The four wheel drive is working. The light did work a few times, but hardly ever comes on. Where is the switch that tells the light to come on? Is it in the 4wd dash switch?

My 96 has the actual 4x4 switch in the radio bezel. Sounds like your 4x4 switch may be going bad or possibly a bad connection to the indicator light bulbs in the cluster.

Yeah I'm sorry it is in the radio bezel. I guess I'll try to take it apart and clean it with contact cleaner or wd40. My turn signals were working intermittently and I found the problem to be with the hazard light switch. They happened to be working when I started to troubleshoot, and I noticed if I applied a light pressure on the hazard light button the turn signals would stop working. Same happened if I wiggled the hazard light button. So I took the column apart and sprayed the button out real good with contact cleaner and they have been working ever since.

Sometimes they just get gunk built up inside & work whenever they want to.
My multifunction switch (hazards, turns) started acting weird & finally wouldn't even turn on the wipers & I had to buy an entire new switch... about $80 but it fixed that issue. If you need a 4x4 switch, let me know... I have a couple I bought for the bulb holders. |
Ok thanks, I'll let you know what I find

Ok so I discovered that the 4wd light only works when the headlights are off, when I turn them on the 4wd light goes out. Does anyone know how to fix this?
