ECT Sensor & Sender Removal & install

I haven't changed one in a 4.0 myself. I see what you mean about the clips but the hex on the bottom suggests that they screw in. The 03 factory shop manual seems to support that because there is a torque spec for the ECT sensor (11 lb-ft).
Do you have the new replacement parts there? That should give some clue as to how they mount.

yeah forget the clips.... the wire harness pops off and then you take them off with a ratchet. I dunno how tight I should tighten these things back up tho. I'm gonna change both the sensor and the sender, it would be stupid not to because for one they are right next to each other secondly I dunno if the trouble code is the sender or the sensor. Both of these parts wont be more than $30 with shipping so again mine as well do em both

11 lb-ft according to Ford.
Only the PCM sensor can cause a trouble code. The gauge sender has no connection to the PCM.
