96 STX engine replacement

I only have 115k miles on her but I hear a valve tappet. I have always cured this by running a crankcase full of diesel with 1 quart of oil added for 20 minutes at fast idle. You can hear the tappets just start to go quiet as it runs. Just get the diesel warm before draining so start with a hot engine.

This iusn't a theory cause I have done it maybe 20 times with the same result. DO NOT rev the engine beyond a fast idle....2K with out any load. Do not drive it with D in the crank case.

Got some other noises going on also. I am not jumping off the deep end but am thinking of an engine R&R. What is a good engine to use? 4.0 push rod.

Do you think there are any engines out there with low miles for a 96?

What do you think I would spend for the parts for a rebuild?

Thanks

John
