You have to tune them, try turning the squelch down, that should get rid of atleast some of the static.

Buy a decent antenna and get hold of an SWR meter. Tune the antenna for the lowest SWR you can get. All the squelch is used for is to cut dead air noise.

swr's cost as much as buying a new cb at Walmart. Those Undiens at walmart arent half bad, and would be great for your setup.

I use a radio shack SWR meter and have double check it against an Astatic meter and found no appraisable difference. Take a look at this link Copper

Wal-mart in San Diego still has the Undiens. However, if you really want a nice setup look at a Galaxy DX 979.

Johnson hasn't made cb's for years, so chances are the radio itself could use a realignment if you can find a competent radio shop that can work on radios of that vintage. A good quality antenna tuned to your vehicle is 99% of a radio system. As far as the static, most newer midrange priced cb's have better noise filtering, and that old Johnson may have some dried out electrolytic capacitors causing some of it also.
You will like ham radio, we have alot of 2meter repeaters here in the hills and you can talk out of almost any valley if you need help whereas the cb is almost useless and hardly anyone uses them here anymore except on the interstate.

A couple people suggested getting a quality antenna.

What constitutes a good antenna? Any suggestions?
