EGR vaccuum leak, best way to fix

2000 3.0 EGR is disconnected and my father who previously owned the truck said it is broken. Now I know it is a vaccuum line of some sort as it sucks air.

1. What is the best way to troubleshoot whether it is actually bad?
2. if it is, how should I go about rigging it? tape over the vaccuum line? run a little plug into air intake tube? idk

thanks

well just follow the vacuum lines from start to stop, find broken hose, if its snapped then you can tape it up (i used electrical tape) if its broken at the boot, i drilled out the old tub out of the rubber boot (use a drill bit just barely large enough for the job) push the old vacuum line back in and i wrapped it with electrical tape, just to be safe. good luck

I am having a similar problem with a broken line. 91, 4cynder. The line from the valve check that goes into the wiring harness through the fire wall needs to be replaced and my local parts store has been anything but helpfull. The original line is really thin, and the connector is a 3/16th line. when I trace the line there is a splice behind the glove box, but again there is a weird size splice. At my wits end because the engine is running extremely rich, and my gas milage is in the toilet. If anyone has encountered such an issue I would love to hear how you fixed it.
