Yes, and there used to be a how-to on Gen-Edge for it and may be one here. BRB...

Here ya' go:

I have one in my truck (among other things, like the overhead console, electronic automatic temperature control, etc.)

My EATC mod is documented on my cardomain site.

One thing on my to-do list is to move the power for the mirror from RUN/ACC to either RUN or START/RUN as the Explorers have. That way the lights won't auto-on when I set the key to ACC at night.

That must be a different one if it's one of the ones with the compass built in. Really most any auto mirror can work, if you know the wiring of it. The Ex mirrors are nice because they mount easily etc.

Thanks, Count Travis for visiting my site and keeping the hit count up, lol!

John's How-to was written before the 2004's were introduced. If you want to use his instructions to install the Explorer autodimming/autolamps mirror in a 2004+ Ranger, some of the color codes need to be changed.

that and the OHC is one of the best ranger mods IMO! I did them both! I missed them so much when i traded my truck in I bought an autodimming mirror w/compass and temperature.

The nice thing about the Ex one is that it controls your headlights automatically. I didn't know if I'd like that feature or not, but I've decided I really do. But the Ex mirror doesn't have the compass/temp display like those nice aftermarket ones. But hey, that's what the OHC is for, lol!

I bought an OHC with the mounting bracket and temperature sensor and I got too chicken to cut into my headliner to do the OHC mod, so instead I bought the aftermarket auto dimming mirror with the temp/compass display...

That hole in the headliner is a potential big issue ("chicken" or not, lol) if you're going to resell the vehicle. I'm keeping mine, so it's no problem.

haven't got anything installed yet but started to dig into finding the right wires heres what i found there are a total of 8 wires going into my head light switch

starting at the top left going down
black - ground?

green/white - only hot when the ignition is on

white/black - Parking lights come on when when this wire is grounded out

Purple/Blue - Hot when headlights are on

Top Right going down

Blue/Red - Hot when parking lights are on

Orange/Black - only hot when the ignition is on

Black - Another ground?

Red/Yellow - Always hot

The only wire that i don't know what to connect to is #30 on the parking lights relay
should i splice it into the white/black, the green/white, or orange/black? Or can i cheat and hook it into the red/yellow with the other relay?

This is how I would do it if I had an 04~06.

Another difference: in the instructions for installing the autolamp mirror in the earlier trucks, the Red/White from the mirror was tapped to the Yellow/Black of the radio harness. The corresponding color code in the 2004~2006 radio harness is Black/Pink. Tapping the Red/White to the Black/Pink wire would give autolamps in RUN or ACC. To have autolamps in RUN only, I would tap the Red/White of the mirror to the Black/Light Green of the HVAC control panel.

When you started this thread, you were asking for a schematic for the Explorer mirror conversion. In a later post, you referenced an eBay auction for a Gentex autodimming compass mirror that does not appear to have the autolamp feature..

Which mirror are you trying to install?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have the OEM 1995~2001 Explorer autolamps/autodimming mirror:
Check to make sure that the mirror is providing ground on the white/pink to the 85 pins when the ignition switch is on and it is dark enough for the photosensor.
Check for battery voltage to pins 86.
Also, the mirror's autolamp function must be turned on for it to work. Earlier mirrors have a dedicated on/off switch but later ones have it built into the slide bar. If you have a later mirror, be sure that the slider is not all the way to the left (off position).
The upper relay in the schematic above controls the headlights only. The lower one handles the rest of the running lights and dash illumination.
The set of two independent relays just mimics the action of the two independent sets of contacts in the headlight switch (one set for the headlights, one set for the other exterior lights and dash illumination).
