I am having some issues with my fog lights and the fuse associated with them.

Shortly after I bought my truck I purchased 9005 Silverstars for my truck. I used them for ~1.5 years with no problems. One burnt out so I replaced them with a Nokya Yellow 9005 with the same wattage. I went through some deep water with them on ~2 months ago and it shorted everything out. The fuse blew and the plug melted to the bulb. I replaced the plug on both sides and soldered the connections and put shrink tubing over them. I had the original 9145 bulbs and ran them for 3 months without any problems.

I wanted to get 9005 Silverstars back in my truck so I purchased a set. I installed one (driver side) and turned the lights on. Both lights lit up. I turned them off and put the other in. Roughly 3 seconds after they turned on the fuse blew. I figured it was too high of a draw but it didn't make sense because I had them before. I took the lights out and replaced them with the 9145's and also replaced the fuse. The exact same thing happened. The fuse blew after about 3 seconds.

What would you recommend to check first? I'm guessing wiring but I don't know where to start. The soldered part is what I'll check first but is there anything else I should know about?

Lots of people run the 9005's (60W) in place of the 9145 (42W) without issues. IMO, this goes back to the failure caused by the water in the housings.

It is likely that there is continuity to ground somewhere in one of the bulb sockets or on the tan/orange wire that runs from the underhood distribution box to the fogs. If you taped up the connections where the repair splices were made, open up the tape and look for water inside.

 

Ok. I'll have to check for that. I'm hoping it's as simple as that. If worse comes to worse is it possible to run a new set of wires from the power distribution box under the hood? Thank you Bob.
