Found a Ranger, Needs some work

I found a Ranger on Craigslist for $300 from a towing company. They say it runs but it stalls alot. They think its the Carb or the fuel pump. So I can get a new engine for fairly cheap. Im thinking of putting in a 2.3 L or equivalent and using it as a DD.

Heres my question. Its 4WD, how hard is it to make it 2WD? Im going for gas milage here, and 2wd would help alot, along with the small engine.

Could I just remove the transfer case or would I need a whole new tranny? I dont want the engine to be using energy spinning the T-case or the extra weight ot the T-case.
