Okay so here it goes....2002 Ford Ranger 6 cylinder 4.0L
2 weeks ago i replaced the front brakes. Driver side just needed pads, Passenger side needed a new rotor also.
Truck drove great. Brakes worked perfectly until...
A couple of days ago i started to notice a faint grind and high pitched noise coming from the passenger side when turning right. Today when making a right turn i heard a clunk and the ABS light came on. Now even when driving straight there is a loud grinding squeal ( with some clicks and clunks in there too) coming from the front passenger wheel that appears to be rotational. The noise is very unsettling, not the least bit subtle. Also the new rotor already has damage to it from the outer edge to about 3/4 of an inch to the inside. So i asked around and figured it was the caliper. I just replaced the caliper, but left the old pins in because they seemed alright and still well greased. The noise is the exact same!

Should i have replaced the pins and pad clips also? Was the caliper a waste of time and money? Could it be the wheel bearings?

Any help would be greatly appreciated i am completely in the dark here.....

 

Is the damage on the outside or inside face of the new rotor. Also did you replace the ABS sensor ring on the new rotor or did it come with one installed?

 

outside of the rotor and as far as i know it came with one on it because i replaced the rotor 2 weeks ago and the abs light didn't come on until the loud clunk today. I also checked to make sure the joints and tie rod wasn't busted. Everything appears okay nothing is loose.

 

is it 2wd or 4wd?

Did you locktite the caliper bracket bolts?

 

i did not... I get the feeling im about to get lectured on the proper way of doing things....

 

Have you taken the wheel off to look at it?

I had a similar problem/sound with my Explorer. The pad came off the shoe and both broke loose creating some horrible sounds.

 

look at the inside of your rim... might not have torqued the caliper bolts leading to one falling out and the caliper grinding on the rim... see it all the time.

 

If its the bracket bolts coming loose just get to them before it gets worse. I had a buddy lose a caliper and almost crash into a center divider on the freeway.

 

I took the wheel off today because after talking to the auto guy who as helped me in the past said it was most likely a bad caliper. Thus i went down bought a new and put it on. But it didnt seem to help at all. I don't think its the bolts coming loose because i had just tightened them after putting the caliper on and the noise was still there as i tried to back out of the drive way....

 

You can do a quick check of the wheel bearings by jacking the wheel up and grabbing it at the 12 and six o'clock and pushing and pulling the wheel in and out (top to bottom). There should be little to no movement.

 

okay so i did the 12 and 6 thing and i'd say there is a lot of movement considering the driver side (that doesn't have anything wrong with it) doesn't move at all.

So can a busted wheel bearing cause all these smyptoms? And secondly how do you go about replacing it?

 

also any ideas how much it should cost?

Yes if the bearing is going out it could cause the symptoms described.

I've got a "clunking" sound coming from one of my front hubs/brakes (I've ruled out tires already, so it's not those); I think it may be the driver side. There is no grinding noise or high freq. vibrations as if there was grinding, but my brakes had been squeeling a while back. Think it could be warped rotars? Its an '05 Edge 4x4, in case that makes any difference. I've replaced brake pads on a few different vehicles before, so I checked these and at a glance they look okay; I haven't really had time to get them off to really look at 'em though. I've also replaced wheel bearings before but not on this truck, or any other 4x4 for that matter. Any ideas or questions to lead me in the right direction? I hope to look at it this weekend.

 

Could you post up pictures of the damage and the problem? Also post up pictures of the entire passenger side front assembly. There could be more there than meets the eye. Also you mention damage to the inner wheel? post a picture of that too.
