Anyone ever hardwired a 3 prong outlet in their truck? Not like in the truck bed but in the cab. I have seen plenty of those converters from the cigarette plug, but I want one with all the wires hidden, and that doesn't take up my cigarette outlets either. Has anyone successfully accomplished this?

Yes an AC outlet, and I know these exist, I have had them, but like I said in the post, I want to know if anyone has HARDWIRED one, ie, custom location, stock looking, now wires showing, etc.

 

mm ive seen it done before. some one on here took their full lenth center console and put a converter in place of the plug in the side of the console. maybe some one has the pic somewhere

You could do it really easily. Just get a power inverter and wire it straight to the battery with a fuse. You could put it in the engine bay or cab. Then just run a extension cord to the bed, cut the end off and get a outdoor outlet and wire it up.

 

so basically wire it up like an amp? And I could just ground it off in the cab right? Could I use an amp power cable and fuse you think? Like an 8 gage or so. I didn't know if there was a way I could tap into exisiting power behind the dash or not.

 

It really depends how big of a inverter you get. For like a 80 watt that plugs into the cigerette lighter you could just tap into the lighter socket for that. But for like a 400 watt (which I would recommend) go straight to the battery. The 8 gauge would work well for that

For running like a drill go with the 400 watt, if not higher. Look at how many watts whatever you want to use requires. You can't use much more than a laptop charger on a 80 watt.

 

Im mainly looking at interior use, like cell phones, laptops for road trips.

 

I have a 400W Black and Decker Inverter I have not mounted it yet. I've been debating on where to mount it. I use it with my 12V dash power plugs and for camping/inflation purposes with my 12V outlet I wired from the battery to the rear of the bed. Make sure to use a fuse. I snaked the power wire thru the frame rail to the batt, and grounded it inside near the left rear tail light. I used the black plastic wiring tubing and black tape to keep it protected the full length.

I have seen at least one that was mounted just under the seat for access with a power plug routed under the carpet thru the dash to a power outlet. 400 watts would easily be enough for cell phones, laptop, charging ipods, etc. It is so nice to have a portable Inverter, the Black & Decker 400W I have comes with wires with clamps to clamp directly to the battery for some portable use as well as the 12V power plug.

 

I would say 300w minimum. Don't put it in the engine bay though, they are not designed to work in those temps or with water. Basically just wire it like an amp. Mount it under a seat, or behind/under the rear seats where they pull out from. Run the wiring under the carpet to get it back there, then under the carpet to the console or where ever you like. Wire it up with a small extension cord and then into a 120v outlet.

 

Chargers come in 12v flavors. I always buy a car charger for every phone I have. As far as laptops I have seen a universal type of car charger. You would just need to verify it works with your specific laptop. Also most 80 watt inverters have enough power to run a charger.

 

i had the black and decker 400 watt in my old car and just so you know 400w+electric weedeater= bad things lol
