headlight wiring question:

OK, so i bought some off road driving lights and i want to wire them so they turn on when I turn the hi beams on (got the wiring diagram from a sticky on here).

Problem/question: I have single beam HID headlights that turn OFF when I select high beams. I cant wire my driving lights to to turn on when hi is selected if the regular headlights turn off. Is there any way to make the headlights NOT turn off when the high beams are selected?

there has to be two wires connecting your headlamps, one for the low beam, one for the high beam. one wire cannot run both. find the wire that powers the high beams, splice into that. then, your off road lights will turn on with just the high beams and not with the low beams.

And always use a relay.

I'd use the "high beam +" to trigger the relay switch side, and that should work. But why not just add an in-cab switch?

Something i'd also add.....is if you get an HID relay harness, you should be able to click into high beams and the low beams still stay on. I ran a hi/lo harness with low beam HID bulbs and when clicked in low AND high, the lamps stayed on. Now I have no clue if both harnesses are the same...but I know that the hi/lo harness has a lil controller box....that might have someting to do with the ability to click to high and the HID's are stay on.

Currently, if you've followed that diagram, when you click to high beam, the lows(HIDs) turn off and your runing just the aux lights.

thats what I want. I dont want another switch inside, just want the driving lights to come on when i hit hi beams.

ok, thats what i need then. a hi/low relay harness for the HIDs. I currently only have a low beam relay harness which causes the headlights to turn off when hi beam is selected...

yeah, thats what i dont want... i want the headlights to stay on regardless of hi or low selected.

thanks for the help guys! i love this forum... lol

Next question: is there any way to modify the harness to run the headlights in low and hi?

umm....probably not. unless you get hi/lo bulbs. or you talking about running the low beams when the high beam is triggered? The hi/lo harness will allow the low to stay on whne the high beam is triggered.

There is a way to do it, I still need to re-read to add a diode to my harness because my hi beam wire triggers a cutoff shield to move out of the way to allow a high beam. My bulb stays in the same place. Maybe read up on http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/

yea.....but........on his set up, and my current setup, when you click to high beam, it kills the hid...because it's taking the + hot from the low beam to tell the ballast to ignite. Just like stock, where the halogen low beam shuts off, when the high beam is switched forward.....then the high beam + takes over.

I wonder what would happen if you spice the high beam wire into the low beam wire...?

That is how mine is setup..lemme search. I rarely need high beams but when I do I just hold the lever towards be with no fear becasue it only keeps the HIDs lit and the low amperage cutoff shields out of the way.

Thats kinda what i was thinking of trying. there must be a way to keep maintain the circuit to low beams when high is selected. maybe Ill give that a shot when I wire up my off road lights.

Im not sure what you mean here. so you have single beam hid?

Only problem with that that i can think of....is that it would pissibly trigger the relay to turn on the aux lights when the low beams are also on....

I have FX projectors from an Infinity, they are modded into my 2003 housing, I am running the 9007 setup into the D2S bulbs and ballasts for the HIDs. The projector itself has the high beam function on it, not need for rebased or funky bulbs or halogens. Sorry if that is a little confusing.

my harness is the same as what your picture shows minus the "bi-xenon" solenoid... hmm wonder if thats what i need

Does it have that diode in it? That once the high beam is triggered, it allows power to flow to the low beam as well, but when the low beams are only on, the diode does not let the power flow "backwards" into the high beam and falsely turn them on as well? Are you using 9007 bulbs or projectors?

Also, this is all independent of the AUX lights as of now, just for clarification, then you can use a tap on the high beam wire to activate a relay then to turn on the Aux lights.

His setup and mine....are a 2 wire plug(ground and low beam +), that plugs into the stock plug for power/switch, from there to the ballast, and ballast to the bulb. Two independent setups...no diodes.

We are running 9007 hid bulbs that are strictly fixed, no solenoid or anything. When we click to high beam, we have no light...because the low beam hot is not hot at that time.

It sounds as if there is no high beam bulb in your setup. They same technique can be used thought to keep the lows on when the high beams are hit, if their intended use is to turn on Aux lights as a high beam. A taped and dioded high beam wire can still supply power to the low beam only setup and also be a "trigger" wire for any Aux lights via a relay. The high beam will have to be accessed before the factory harness plug then I guess.

I will check back in the morning but I need to get up at 6, so off to bed for me... Hope that helps some so far.

Here is my harness: there are 2 extra wires sticking out of the remote turn on plug (which is plugged into the factory harness). one of these extra wires is the high beam wire.
