My problem is . the coil power modulator is shorted out. the modulator has no part number or any kind of manufactures ID on it. the local carquest parts store couldn't find any info. on it either so i could get it replaced. I have been searching the web and haven't seen one like it. I'm looking for any help and advice on replacing this module

Once you find those things out you will need to go to a friendly Ford Part Room and have them do some searching for it and bring the unit with you.
NOTE: Some Ford Parts Man will blow you off if you don't have the vehicle serial number that the motor came out of... be prepared.
Another thought, once you know the year of this engine, you might consider eliminating this module with something aftermarket.
Dave's DUI Unit, and many others may solve your problem.
I wish I had the knowledge base RonD works off of... but I am more of a thought person, so I'm thinking out loud... throwing out an idea or two.
My new distributor, 5.0L MSD, has its own module and wiring harness, so if you have the year of the engine/vehicle, then you might override all the Ford BS and get aftermarket. Only problem is the cost.
Also, do you know what the wire splicing was all about ?
The engine is out of a 1985 Mustang GT ,. its a 302, 5.0 with a Holley 650 carburetor. IThas a 3 speed automatic transmission that came out of the same Mustang as the engine. Now the information I Have on the engine and transmission the ranger has in it now is all second hand info. I havent got access to the guy that did the motor swap as of yet. He is a friend of the guy I got the car from.
I haven't got to talk to the guy that did the engine swap as of yet. He is a friend of the guy that gave me the Ranger and he lives a couple of hundred miles from me. I am trying to get a face to face meeting with him soon
I am not sure why he did the hack job on the wiring. That's on of the items on my ever going list of things I want to discuss with the man that created this mess. I got the Ranger as payment to a rather small debt I was owed so I can afford a few dollars to straighten things on the RANGER
