help reading trouble codes in 93

I have a 93 ranger with the 4 cylinder, it is showing a check engine light, but my scanner wont hook up to it, anyone know how to read the codes?

What you do is, get a paper clip and stick it in to 2 holes in the data link connector under the dash and count the flashes. But I'm not sure which 2 .
