melted parking brake cable

I just noticed my parking brake cable on my 99 4.0 ext cab is rubbing the underside of the exhaust and has melted a pretty good divot in the cable. Is this cable supposed to be routed over the exhaust or have some type of retainer spring to hold it away from the exhaust pipe?

There's clips on the rear axle to keep it away. Is replace them if it burned thru. Water will get on the cable and cause then to seize possibly your brakes. Happened to me twice

Thanks 04RangerDave, I'll check for the clips. Are they clips or is there a retainer spring that holds it in place?
