My 97 2 wheel drive Ranger is having inconsitant ABS.
New to the forum so forgive me If I break any unspoken rules.
I have a 97 Ranger. 4.0 with 2 wheel drive. For the past year I have been having ABS issues that I have never been able to nail down.
So to start, About a year ago the ABS started intermittently failing. Most days I would start the truck up and it wouldn't work, some rare days I would start it up and the ABS does work but then shuts off after 2 minutes of driving. Some even more rare days it works for the whole 10 minuted drive. I blindly replaced the rear sensor and it didnt change the behavior. I then changed the whole master cylinder thinking I had a leaking cylinder. No change. I have NOT replaced the one sensor that sits on the top of the master cylinder (Cruise control brake sensor? Cruise control always works regardless)
I have noticed that when the ABS does work in the morning backing out of the driveway that the brakes are extremely grabby and lock up with a really light touch of the brake pedal. After a few times the brakes normalize and it seems to work fine until it shuts off randomly.
I have also noticed that when the ABS system is not working that the brakes seem a little softer but consistent. and when its working (normally) the brakes are a little tighter and grabby after the initial locking up issue in the driveway.
To sum it up the ABS sometimes still works. 9 times out of 10 it doesent.
I could really use some help with diagnosing the problem. I dont know where the ABS control module is located. I would like to start by disconnecting some of the wires and maybe clean the connectors. Other then that I'm not sure what else to do unless I have missed a sensor somewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good day! I'm no expert, but I'd had a similar experience. Mine turned out to be a broken wire on my left front wheel sensor. I had the abs system scanned and it reported a wheel sensor fault (I think it also identified soothe down to the wheel, or maybe it was front vs back, or left vs right, can't quite remember). But I got all up in it and discovered the severed wire.
Hope you find your problem!
