My truck is a 2004 Ranger with an 8.8 rear with the 4.10LS gears. I just changed out the fluid in my rear differential. The owners manual says that it should take 2.5 liters. The common rule of thumb that I've heard is that you want to fill it up till it pours out. I've got just under 3 liters of gear oil in there and I still can't feel it when I put my finger in there.

So I've got more than what Ford recomends, yet I don't have enough for the common rule of thumb. Am I good, or should I run to the store and ge more?

 

i always fill it till it comes out the front fill hole a bit. i never pay attention to how much it actually takes.

you are filling it from the front hole right? on the drivers side of the pumkin?

 

Yes Zach, that's correct, from the front drivers side of the pumkin. There is no other spot for me to put it in that I've found.

Do you know how many bottles of the gear oil you go through? I went through three of them and they're each about 975mL or something like that.

i bet you are really really close to being full

 

why is it taking u so much? they didnt change the 8.8 at all did they? it takes like 2 or just under 2 for me...

 

It is about level I think, maybe a little off. Any ideas on what I should do?

 

just go get another one and save the rest for next time


edit: ha, i just realized your talking in liters, i was thinking quarts...

 

mine took about 3 bottles ish.. still had some in the last bottle not much...but that was a 7.5

i also just fill it till it comes out. never checked really what its supposed to be, usually its filling it then it starts poring out then i am like crap were is the plug.. so cussing and looking around as gloppy lube is dripping then find it and put it in... lol then i have a mess.. pretty much same thing every time...

 

Well, they only had two liters of Lucas at the store, and no LS additive, so I bought the two liters of Lucas and added one more of something else. I decided to leave it as is, because my truck wasn't sitting anywhere near level when I was filling it up.
