Icon4 No Crank/Start, PATS/TCSM

Hello all,

My '01 Ranger has been running fine for a while, however, today it stalled on me (not the main problem). After turning off the truck and attempting to restart, the "THEFT" light on the dash blinked rapidly and I now have a No Crank/No Start.
I know from making these transponder keys that the chip can be damaged/interfered with that would not allow the truck to read it, however, I got my spare key and it too did not work. Oddly enough, my key fob does work and I was able to enter "programming mode" for the key fob using my current keys.
After scanning with an ODBII reader I got the following codes:
B1681 & B1359. Does the PATS/TCSM need to be replaced (if so, is it DIY) or the antenna array in/around ignition cylinder?

I'd hate to have to git rid of the truck over something so minor, it only has 106k and it's my first truck (I currently drive a full-size)

I think its much a simpler issue
Did you look up the codes?

B1359 - Ignition Run/Acc Circuit Failure
B1681 - PATS Transceiver Module Signal Is Not Received

B1359 says/means low or no battery voltage on some circuits
An the other code says key could not be read

So start with the battery cables, clean BOTH cable ends AND the terminals
If you have a volt meter test battery voltage, 12.3v to 12.8v is acceptable

Did you find out why the Ranger stalled?
Was it an electrical issue

There are two fuses in cab fuse box, 19 and 26, pull both OUT and have a look, then put back in if not blown

I think you are looking at an electrical issue not PATS, although PATS needs electricity

PATS will go into LOCKDOWN after the 3rd or 4th attempt to start engine
You have to wait 90min before trying again even with a different key

These are the specific PATS "B" codes
B1213 Less than 2 (or 3 if equipped w/Valet key) keys programmed to the system.
B1232/B2103 Transceiver internal antenna damaged. Replace transceiver.
B1342 ECU is defective (EEPROM in PCM is not working — replace PCM). PATS related when stored in PCM only.
B1600 Non-PATS Key or damaged key.
B1601 Unprogrammed encoded ignition key detected (leave ignition on for 20 seconds before trying a programmed key, in Anti-Scan Mode).
B1602 Partial detection of encoded ignition key.
B1681 Transceiver signal not detected.
B2141 Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) configuration failure — No PCM ID stored in PATS.
B2139/U2510 PCM ID does not match between the PCM and PATS control(PATS/ICM/VIC/HEC/SCIL).
B2431 Key program failure (defective key or transceiver).

If transceiver has low or no voltage you would get B1681, but NOT B1359 as well
So B1359 was/is mot likely causing B1681
Fix the electric system and that should allow PATS to work

2001-2003 Rangers have PATS in the computer not a separate module, so the only external part is the transceiver around the ignition key slot
Transceiver is a 4 wire Powered Antenna, thats all, can be swapped out without any reprogramming

Key Fobs are a separate system, no connection to PATS
If you enter programming mode for Fobs that ERASES ALL FOBS in memory, so have all your Fobs with you as they all needed to be added back into memory

Thanks Ron,

At the time of this stall, I was towing a trailer, empty, but a god 850-1000lbs to just move it. The stall happened right as I turned, came to a stop and put into reverse. I've noticed that the RPMs plumet to the low 100-300 range when going into reverse immediately after a hard turn under normal driving. I will check the battery and other items you mentioned.

Thanks a bunch, I will report my findings.

PATS can not stall a running engine, just FYI
PATS is ONLY used to test the key when you turn key to ON
After engine starts PATS is asleep until computer is turned off(key off) and restarted(key on again)

If engine stalls and you don't turn key to OFF, it should restart without a PATS key test, its only if you turn the key off and then on again would PATS wake up
If it didn't restart then not a PATS issue at that time, it would be a no fuel or a no spark issue
