Welcome to the forum

An engine is a self powered air pump
IF air can't get in and can't get out then no power

When you burn gasoline(a Hydro-carbon, H) mixed with air(oxygen, O) you get a by-product of H2O(water), which is why tail pipes can drip water
But this also means exhaust systems RUST from the inside out

You had a hole in the exhaust, maybe thats because exhaust system was blocked, so pressure poked a hole at a weak rusted out spot, and rusted Cat or muffler parts have broken off and are blocking flow
No air out = low power
You can use a vacuum gauge to test for blocked exhaust, or open up that hole again and if it runs better you have a blocked exhaust

2.3l Lima engines also have a timing belt, when was it last changed?
When these get older they can stretch and slip, with changes valve timing and lowers power
