Icon4 Starter? HELP PLEASE!!

So i drove my ranger to work and i came out after and i went to start it and the engine did not even turn over....
waited like an hour and it started like normal.
Same thing happened today...a buddy of mine came down and mentioned the starter...he got under it and cross connected the negative and positive parts of the starter and then i went to try it again and it started right up...
when he cross connected the terminals, it sounded that the solenoid was fine because it was turning but somehow did not turn over the engine....

Would this be that my problem is really the starter?
I have no clue what it is and my truck is currently sitting in the driveway which sucks.....
any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
