On Startup When It's Cold
On Startup When It's Cold
Whenever I start my truck first thing in the morning to go to work or school or whatever when my engine is cold and has been sitting in the garage all night it makes these clicking sounds. It's coming from the engine bay and I don't know what it is. Sometimes it will do it 2 - 3 times. Or 4 or 5 times. I have no idea what it could be. My warranty is up in 800 miles! If it's an easy fix I will do it otherwise I am going to take it to the dealer. Anyone experience this same thing? Or is it just the weather do you think? BTW, it didn't do this last winter, and I parked on the driveway.
Valvetrain clicking due to starvation of oil on initial startup. You use a Fram filter, right?
Next oil change, get a Motorcraft filter. It has an ADV (anti-drainback valve) which keeps the oil higher up in the block to prevent this from happening.
Nothing to get too worried about, though.

I do not use Fram. I stopped using those around 18,000 miles or so. I've been using Motorcraft and Mobil 1 on and off. You think I should switch to 0W-20 Mobil 1 instead of 5W-30 Mobil 1? I'm due for an oil change here soon. I might get another Mobil 1 filter. Been using Motorcraft on this last couple times.

And Diabolic, it is not my A/C compressor. I never use it.
it will hurt stuff in the long run. where you live it would be a good idea to use the 0w20 motor oil, it has a thinner viscocity in cold weather so it pumps a lot faster. you may also, want to consider AMSOIL, its a 100% synthetic oil, unlike mobil 1, so it stays fluid better in cold weather
Does it stop when the motor is warm or maybe u just can't hear it after the motor is warm bcuz your no longer in a semi-closed, quiet area, like the garage when you 1st start the truck? Next time u pull into the garage for the night, listen and see if you hear the sound? You might just be hearing the injectors from the higher idle and quiet garage???? Or could be like the others said, valvetrain. Also when u pull into the garage have someone hold the engine at a bit higher rpm, like it would be when u 1st start the truck.
Just my 2 pennys.
Worth a try b4 you start thinking it to be the valvetrain.

AMSOIL will last that long if you change the filter every 12500. i personally am going to change both every 10k just for the hell of it. But even if you consider the cost of AMSOIL is only about $1 more per quart than Mobil 1, and you get the benefits of a FULL Synthetic oil, even if you just go 10k like me, your still saving money and using a better oil
It only makes the popping noises when I start it up after sitting all night and only for a second or two. Then it stops every other time I start it up.
Well Mobil 1 is expensive enough for a college student, lol. And I thought Mobil 1 was fully synthetic as well?

mobil 1 is not 100% synthetic. in fact, my cousin is the president of marketing for Exxon Mobil, he told me they are coming out with an extended drain 7500 mile synthetic oil. when i asked what was different, he told me they added more supersyn. which means, it wasnt 100% before, and it still wont be 100%. John Griggs has more info on the topic.
