Tail light harnesses

I have a 98 which has the 3 bulb setup. I am wanting to switch to 06+ tails which is a 2 bulb setup. Could I just buy a 2 bulb harness for a plug-and-play setup to run the 06 tails? I remember someone tapped into the trailer lights but i'd rather not do that.

If i remember correctly you have to go all the way to the connector under the cab, but i'll try looking to make sure

You should be able to swap taillight harness'. When I swapped beds it was with a 93-97 Ranger. At the time I wanted the 3-bulb set up so we left the harness' on the beds. The 3-bulb set up plugged in and worked fine. I just swapped it back out with a 2-bulb harness and have 06 tails on the way.
