TC lockup switch

So I'm lookin for the wire that controls the TC. Looking to install a TC lockup switch for Anti theft purposes.

I need to find where the wire is and the color coding on it to ground out the solenoid and lock the torque converter at any speed any gear... The diesel guys use it to smoke people out, and mostly for towing so it doesn't kick down, but my friend also uses his for security reasons too.. since he doesn't have an alarm..

I'm assuming that it's on the harness coming off the trans by the linkage (was on my buddy's PSD)... But anyone know what the wires go to?

Truck is a 4.0L auto 01..

04blackedge 07-30-2008 02:49 PM

I told you what it was lol, its the same as the PSD. Its the VT/YE coming off the tranny. You can grab it off the PCM as well.

TrePaul86 07-30-2008 02:55 PM

I know that now... You and your manual!

04blackedge 07-30-2008 03:01 PM

Gotta love it haha, I'll take some pics of everything tonight for a how-to

Boo I like the word clutch without Torque converter.

jrpro130 07-30-2008 03:16 PM

That would be awesome. I would love to be able to do this. So it would lock in whatever gear your in? I could definetly use that for cruising on the hwy with a trailer...O/D here I come!

Sure can, lock it into top gear better economy, thats one of the other reasons we decided to use the TC solenoid, you can lock it into gear. This will also prevent the tranny from going into gear when the trucks parked.

Howd you figure this trick out Trent?

04blackedge 07-30-2008 03:22 PM

Tre told me about it, he found it from some of his friends with diesels. I got a wiring manual for my truck the other day and just looked up where the torque converter soleniod was and what wire controlled it. Its super simple, just tap into the wire with a switch so when the switch is on it grounds that wire.

MudSlanger 07-30-2008 03:22 PM

coool

04blackedge 07-30-2008 03:24 PM

Yep, I was orginally gonna put a switch on the starter wire but then Tre reminded me that they can still put it into neutral and move it lol.

jrpro130 07-30-2008 03:26 PM

Yea, all the diesel guys do this for smoke :)

Edit: you doing a how to? That would be great...

04blackedge 07-30-2008 03:26 PM

Yeah I'll be doing one tonight. I'll go ahead and start workin on it now.

Haha yeah I think this is how Tre found it, he told me he was lookin for info on it.

TrePaul86 07-30-2008 03:33 PM

I've wired a few of them on my buddy's trucks... Just did another one last night on my friends PSD... Works like a charm.. At idle in gear, you can flip the switch and it dumps it into OD and kills the truck.. Like dumping the clutch on a manual.. they say on the diesel forums, if this happens, the switch is done right.

We mainly did it on his truck last night for smoking reasons, but it's also good to have on any vehicle, anti theft, fuel economy, what have you.... Maybe this will help us all increase hwy mileage... Well those of us that got blessed with autos hahah

What happens is it locks out the TC and prevents it for the most part from slipping into the lower gear.. Alot of the diesel guys use it for towing, keeps them in od and their egt's as well as boost on the tubro... As we all know, diesels get their power in the 1500-2500 power band range... so for them, if they can keep it in OD pulling a load, they can keep that toque where they need it when pulling..

04blackedge 07-30-2008 03:36 PM

Here's the how-to I'll edit it for more info and pics tonight:

For anti-theft reasons a hidden toggle switch for the fuel pump is also a good idea.

Thats what this is, just better. This will not let the truck move at all. The fuel pump switch still lets them put the truck into neutral and roll it. Both would be the ultimate defense lol

Thats why I want a MANUAL diesel. (preferably cummins, they are more common with their 6spd than PSD with their manual)

What about a battery cut off switch? too eeasy for them to find out?

Goodysgotacuda 07-30-2008 07:49 PM

I know what you mean by they cant roll it. I just cant see the average ranger being high on the theft list. If someone wants your truck, they'll tow the thing off and not even mess with it. Given that, i'd just do a fuel cutout and call it a day. Good luck!:cop:

I'd rather just flip a switch and ground out the control side for the fuel pump relay and go.

TrePaul86 07-30-2008 07:53 PM

I want to be able to lock out the converter on the highway to keep the rpm's low and get some better mileage while making my 120mi hike down to corvallis lol

Goodysgotacuda 07-30-2008 07:58 PM

Your truck doesn't do that from the factory? Ford put it there and puts it to use just fine in my truck. Cruising down the highway i can flick the brake pedal and watch the converter lock release on the tach....You'll probably not gain anything mpg wise as long as its working like it should from the factory..And if you try and climb or accellerate with it locked and it shouldn't..you'll end up lugging it more and getting worse mileage in my opinon.

jrpro130 07-30-2008 08:03 PM

Yea, mine does that too. Also if you let off the gas, then hit it again, it will either downshift or unlock.

TrePaul86 07-30-2008 08:07 PM

Yeah, I don't want it to unlock... That's the thing... I'll unlock it going up a hill, but on the flat ground I'll lock it to keep the rpm's low

Goodysgotacuda 07-30-2008 08:09 PM

Interesting, well should work out well for that. Mine seems to do that as is.
