Truck went swimming
 

Ok first time that I went Real off roading yesterday and tried to show up a stock rubicon. He thought the "puddle" was too deep, Pansy. So I went for it. First my headlights disapeared, i was doing pretty good---untill about half way through the truck died. It took a few seconds (felt like hours) to get the truck started, I put it in 4 low and crawled out no problem. On the other side I could hear a slight tick in the engine (water in there?) and I know my muffler was under water (could hear the gurgling and probably why truck died). After about 5 min of running the ticking went away, tranny light went off (I think the light was due to the breather being under water) and all appeared well. Truck runs fine today, my question is, is there any thing i should check on? (besides my thought proccess). Maybe change the oil and what not. Any help is great, i only have 1600 miles onher and would like her to last a little longer. BTW the rubicon went through it as well.

i wuld change ALL of your fluids...

also check for water in the oil..

headlights went under?

that is where your intake is.

i would pull your spark plugs, turn it over to get the water out of there...

i would also drain my differential, new fluids... new transmission fluid... oil change, etc... change any and every fluid related to your truck.

it is no bueno getting that brand new truck so wet...

were you trying to set a record for lowest mileage truck to need a new motor/transmission?

check the air filter to see if its all nasty... theres more stuff because my brother flooded his car but i cant think of them now...

good idea BEFORE!!! restarting your truck you could cause all kind of damage had you filled your cilinders with water and tryed to start it.

Cheak your front wheel bearings, tcase fluid, and u joints in addition to what was already mentioned.

Christian thats one of the benifits of offroading with him. just buy some wadding pants like Tommy has and walk into it before you drive into it

well i would love to see some pictures of this "puddle.." sounds fawking deep...


did you get any water inside of your truck? i demand pictures!

I appreciate all the advice. If and when I go back out there, I will get pics. I have after pics that i took this morning. So do you think I should bring it to the ford dealer and say go synthetic all around (to aviod the WTF do we need to change the fluids for)? How much am I looking at spending for syn, tranny fluid, dif fluid, (I know oil) etc...

Seriously though, change you oils. All of them. Now.

Don't take it to the ford dealer, they'll try voiding you warranty. change it with reg. oils for now, order Amsoil, and then change it again.

man your lucky you didnt mess anything up. definetly change your fluids just to be sure and pay attention to every little noise that your engine makes and if something doesnt sound right you better stop and check it.i blew the engine out of my old mazda mudding it and trying to drive it home with a "tick" in the motor and i didnt make it home...lol

just get her super cleaned up.

if something goes, down the line, you are gonna want a clean truck when you have her towed into the dealer... dealers don't like seeing mud all over the motor/transmission/inside the bumpers/etc...

i had 2 transmissions replaced through the dealer, under warranty.

let me tell you your story. haha

you don't know what mud is. you don't know what deep water is. your truck is spotless. you have a 4x4 for snowy roads. that's all.

You did that in a brand new truck? Damn.

BTW - better get the interior dried out if you got a lot of water in it. If you don't, a much nastier smell will replace the new truck smell.

What mud? What water, I think i got it. Amsoil is the best to go with eventually. Again appreciate the help. She is alreayd cleaned up (1.5 hours at carwash 6:30 am.)

Ok it wasn't the smartest thing, BUT!!! I had to try it, I think I will cool it for a little while, just had to see what she could/couldn't do. It is definataly a learning experiance.

have fun with rocks. have fun with trails. have fun with sand. have a small amount of fun with mud.

im finding that out now about 6 months later... seals are starting to go to crap....

i would recommend all the oil changed like others did.

my hood disapeared under water... i had a simular issue...
truck wouldnt start right away,(air filter was soaked all the way through) wouldnt run good, squeaked, made all kinds of noises.
i changed my diffs and transfer case, and engine oil after i got home(1000 miles trip) another bad idea. lol
only thing i havnt changed since is the tranny, the trany now is getting progressivly worse...and now the truck doesnt shift right.

Don't feel too bad. Many of us did crap like this w/ their brand new trucks. (Well, I did..) My 3rd weekend w/ the truck I burried it up to the crease in the door. Fortunately I was off camber, w/ the driverside down. Fortunately the intake is on the passenger's side. But that was pure luck on my part. I assure you I was to stupid to know better at that point.

Also, if you think this sort of thing will be a semi-regular occurance, I'd advocte extending the axle breathers. Another thing many of us knew nothing about before romping into the deep end. Fortunately my truck was factory equipped w/ extended breathers. Come to think of it, my truck's factory equipment has saved me from myself several times...

Ok just a quick recap--- Change Oil, Both Diff fluid, Tranny fluid, transfer case fluid. check air filter, change tranny filter, and DONT DO IT AGAIN??? Is that it, any one give me an estimate of how much this is going to cost.

you can do it again, but you have to take some precautions before doing it. Extend breathers, snorkel, seal all electrical stuff under the hood, some other things

sounds good.. but what another member mentioned was to change it all run it for a few weeks then have it all changed agian to Amsoil. seems like overkill but it would prolly be best.

I said to change it, then change it again to Amsoil, becuase it may be his DD, and can't wait for the Amsoil to get shipped out. But, it wouldn't hurt anyways.

and colin, i know all about paying to play. above and beyond what anyone on this site even knows or most have experienced.

i would rather have a dent, or get stuck and pulled out, than replace the most important and expensive pieces to a truck. that was why i said what i said. :tapedshut
